The statue was defaced with “WLM” and “White Lives Matter.”

in the uk it has gone stupid, a group of protesters tear down a statue and throw it in the river, the police stand by and do nothing, a guy takes a piss in a gap next to a statue and gets arrested! We cannot have this mob mentality of people running around destroying thing just because they don't like them, where does it all end, do we go from a group of BLM protesters attacking statues to a group of anti gay protesters attacking gay people, because that's how things like that start.
I'm disgusted at the level of stupidity and lack of intelligence of some of these idiots, a statue of Queen Victoria was vandalised, yet the abolition of slavery act came into force four years before she became queen, she was also one of the people most active in persuading the USA to abolish slavery, likewise Churchill, a statue of him was vandalised, he led the fight against the Nazi's without which these people wouldn't be allowed to protest, they'd have been shot!
I had two relatives who played an important part in WW2, one fought in the Normandy Landings and the other was in the Dambusters squadron and took aprt in the bombing of the Ruhr Dams, if anyone starts damaging war memorials in my area then I'm afraid I'll be out protecting them.

This was done by anonymous perpetrators using the name and slogan of a virulent Neo-Nazi group whose existence and growth is a result of, or reaction to, BLM. White Lives Matter seems to be an outgrowth of an obscure Texas-based racist organization that feeds off of precisely movements like the call to remove white statuary. I don't know how far defacing the statue of Arthur Ashe will get them, since I think most people have a favorable impression of Ashe, who seemed in life like a really nice guy who contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion--someone for all to look up to. It's my fear that these symbolic, mindless attacks feed on each other and will needlessly exacerbate tensions at a time when BLM is making real progress.

 

They clearly just targeted the first black statue they could find, because the only negative thing I can think of related to Arthur Ashe
was his revelation that he had AIDS.

Seems to me it would be hard to take issue with that, unless you have in mind some cynical thought like "Life is cheap". "We kill people every day, directly in battle, indirectly through neglect, etc." The idea that they're precious is too often an ideal or aspiration instead of a reality, but at least it's important to hold that value. But I'll let you explain yourself.

Ordinarily we value all human life. The Black Lives Matter movement focuses on black lives because a string of killings by police seem to call into question whether or not black lives do matter. Why is this bullshit?
