dont worry about roots no knotting yet. just do them and leave then they will sort them selfs. If you worry lots about the roots then grab the top of the dread between your index and middle finger and pushing down on the scalp make circles ...like when you knuckle someones head. Then just palm rub. OR the more painfull way is to get a wooly hat (or anything wooly)and put it on the head and rub int anti clock wise round the whole head for about a minuite and then rip all the roots appart from each other.

Hello, I'm Knotty J. I got a little problem with loose hair that I'll try explainin for ya. My knots are about 8 months old, they will be on the 4th of next month anywho. They are pretty tight, and just about to the point of being impossible to comb out. There are still loose hairs all around, and I dont mean just at the scalp, but hair that somehow undreaded from these dreads and has nowhere to go now. What can I do to get these hairs back into my dreads? It's the only reason I've considered cutting in these past 8 months. If this hair wasn't all around I'd love my little knotties. Is there a way I can get them into the dreads when I crotchet the tips to make them round? A friend of mine plans on helping me with that later on today or tommorow so that would be good. Also, does anyone know of any natural bleaching/natural permanent hair dyes? Thanks so much

    Welcome Knotty J!

Here are a couple ideas you could use to get your loose hairs into place...

Rub wool on them counterclock wise in circles over your head. The hair will take to the dreads like that. You can also use fleece. I use fleece for this because I am allergic to wool. I think it works fine but I've been told it doesn't work quite as well.
Take the loose hairs that bother you the most or go through the process of finding them all and placing a string around the loose hair and the dreadlock you want them to form to and tie it at the root. Wrap the string down your dreadlock a little too so that it combines. After a month cut it off and let your hair do the work. Do you ever wear anything on your head? I have a link on this forum with a headwrap thing I made that covers your whole head. I left this on my head for a month and my dreadlocks matured pretty well under there. It was a bitch to pull 'em apart but I think it really helped them form.(heres the link to what I'm talking about if you want to try to make one: http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65781).
For being 8 months this is normal. It can take years for all your dreadlock's loose hairs to find a dread to take to and form on.

As for hair dye I don't know much about this stuff. Maybe Crystal eyez or Fleassy will see this... I think they both could give you some good suggestions for natural dyes.

I once worked with a guy with thick hair like mine who left it alone to its own devices (but washing it of course) and after a while, it just as dreaded up on it's own. Is this common? The reason I ask is 'cause I've been trying the same thing, but I only seem to have a couple forming within my pony tail. Is there something I should be doing in these 'awkward stages' or am I just being impatient and should just let my hair be?

    Thank you much:)

It depends on what you wash your hair with and it will probably take a decent time for them to actually form... over a year or more. What are you using on your hair?

yes... regular shampoo will ruin dreadlocks because they leave residue behind and soften the hair... I think it may be slowing down your dreading process. Wash it with a soap that has only ingredients that you can read in it. And, as few as possible. And, no conditioners or fragrance in them! Pretty much a residue free shampoo is what you want and you can find them in drug stores(if you look hard), look for sensitive scalp shampoo. I use Dr. Bonners tea tree bar soap. You can probably find good stuff too at a natural health food store. Rubbing wool on your hair will probably help it along also. Heres a list of sites with good shampoos for dreadlocks and hair in the process of growing dreadlocks...

that will work, you just may have to pull them apart alot if they are already sectioned. If you leave them go without the bands though and use dread soaps they should work too.
