I like the whole hippy idea and everything but with so many different manifestations and interpritations do we really need a definate name or branding. Everyone is different and an individual. One of the things i dont like about religion is that you must conform to all the rules and believe it all without a doubt. i think all relgions have a good point in some way or another. I think this can be used directly with "hippy". "Hippy" creates so many unecessary and untrue stereotypes etc is it really necessary to have a name at all. The world at the moment seems to have an obsession with grouping people together and branding them. I wrote this not to offend or anything like that it was just an idea that i would like other peoples contribution and opinion on thanks for reading.

eveyone thinks i'm crazy for this but i rather like catagorizing and naming things and groups of people. it feels tribal and, since i don't live near any real tibal activities, fantasy-like. and it makes it easier to at least partially understand people. the problem is when people take it too seriously or completely adhere to seperations. eveyone has things in common just as everyone has differences. i know i sound nieve or stupid with this opinion but subcultures and catagories are all about ego and models for this game(life) we play and i dont really think that there's anything initially wrong with that. but like i said, it becomes redicioulous when it's taken too seriously.

another big problem with defining and catagorizing is when people have totally different ideas of the subculture (or whatever you wanna call it).

i'd have to say that 'hippy' is one of the most broadly defined groups of people in my mind.

I agree..i do not like labels..because i may look like a hippy..but i by no means believe alot of things that the hippies believe in....or stand for...i also feel the same way about christianity..i believe in some of it..but i cannot conform to all of it 'without a doubt'

i'm not really keen on labels either, putting yourself into a box isnt fun in my opinion...why cant we just "be" what we are...individuals with common interests, but not necessarily "same as" everyone else.
I might be called a hippie cos i'm a very liberal person, i like making things instead of buying them and i respect nature BUt i dont wear my hair long nor i dress "like" one...i dont even smoke that much pot, but in the eyes of some I'm a harcore hippie *LOL*...I'd like to believe I'm me. thats it.

Thats exactly what im trying to say. Why must everyone have a label or fall into a category. Why carn't we all just be indiviudualy and ourselves.

it's the way our minds work. we make models and systems to help us understand our environment and such. lol, it seems to me like it would be more boring if we didn't have them. i think that all we need to do to solve the negative aspects of it is to keep open minds... dont be surprised when something doesn't follow its steriotypical way. but be able to get a general idea from observing patterns and simularities. this is one of the things that i've been training myself to do, in the back of my mind, for for a few years now. i'm a huge fan of communication and a lot of people like to express and communicate through simple things like clothes. = joy ^.^

one thing i've learned is that if i competely hate a group of people based on their beliefs (nazis and racists for an example) i probably don't have a clue about them and their beliefs wich is a stupid way to solidify an opinion. so i look into them like i really want to understand and my complete hatred cools down to a simmering disgust. heh. but yeah... by looking at all the large groups of people (simular interests/beliefs) and how they dislike eachother sometimes, trying to understand both of them at the same time, i've come to the conclusion that if there's a strong following, there's usually a good reason.

everyone can justify their pourpose just as well as the next group. this kinda sounds obvious in a way... but it's good for me to note because if i hate something, one of the things that makes it hate is my complete bafflement of it.
