2019-nCoV Coronovirus (COVID-19]

Discussion in 'Science and Technology' started by Vanilla Gorilla, Jan 29, 2020.

  1. It’s probably selfish, but I want a lockdown. Cozy, layin around all day... I don’t get why we have to speed around all the time anyway. Seems like some neurotic folks just need the distraction.

I can fly to New York right now for $34.
Not that I would, or that there would even be a point considering.
But damn it would be nice to take advantage of cheap travel right now

I also checked flights to italy just for fun but flights are still around 1500

I realize this virus is dangerous, and I do take reasonable precautions. But I also wonder about the wisdom of shutting down vast parts of the economy and curtailing people's liberties to slow the spread of this virus. Sooner or later- and medical people would certainly prefer to spread the infections over time- we all are going to be challenged by this virus. Most of us will recover just fine. I don't have a good answer- I don't think there is one.

Thing is: just because the answer isn't clear yet certain people like the OP are portraying it like the officials have no idea what they're doing. But that's not entirely true either. Such people just disagree with a decision that impacts the economy this heavily. No government wants to do this for no good reason though, should give people like VG a hint as to why they actually do go with such a measure. Oh yeah, then the conspiracy theories commences... Sigh. This is how i regard this thread by now.

... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

    :D

I got the day off work tomorrow myself. Not problematic for the business, and I was willing and ready to work so feel indifferent. It's not that much of a treat neither as i standard have plenty of free time.

For what reason do you recommend it to me? I'm fully aware the data governments and experts have to go by is not 100% reliable. Still doesn't mean they're idiots for trying to deal with it the way they do. Fact is only advising citizens won't work good enough. Fact is, no social abstinence of any sort will cause too many people to be seriously sick, while needing intensive care, at the same time. This care simply is limited. So some people will die merely because of a lack of care because other people don't get the purpose of temporary social abstinence.

Because it raises a lot of good points and it's good to have an open mind.

Do you guys think, if the world was able and willing to work cooperatively (please humor me for the sake of discussion) and all nations committed to doing a planned (like give everyone warning and send the national guard or other nation's equivalent out to distribute adequate food and supplies first), mandatory quarantine for 3 - 4 weeks, that we could contain this thing and get back to normal sooner?

It just is starting to seem like a better option than shutting down different places at various points in time. Feels like we're just headed for a slow calamity doing it this way

It likely can't be contained, as in kept out. Only slowed down, so not too many folks get seriously ill at the same time (a significant but uncertain amount of people will get infected but only be mildly affected by it). Which with what we know so far, seems very very worthwile.

I think I mentioned in order to contain it, we lock down the hosts - it finishes off in the host and its not able to spread..
    social distances works.

Sounds right. But not all the hosts are known.

    Indeed, quoted for emphasis.
