really what causes a high smog area, is it topography or factories or both?

It can be one or the other as long as Man/Civilization is present.
Usually it's a combination of both.

Smog is most common in densely populated cities like LA, London and Mexico City. Topography and climate has a lot to do with it as well.

Traffic causes a lot of it. Atlanta has some of the worst smog problems in the country - they have probably at least 20 high smog days each summer. There's not a tremendous amount of factories around there and there aren't really mountains like LA to sock the air in and prevent circulation. Its just the dense humid air combined with horrific traffic.

that makes sense we had clean air when there wasn't a lot of people. I've seen th epopulation double or triple in the last ten years adn they are constantly expnading another lane on every freeway and building more freeways.

We don't have high smog warnings here. The Smokey Mountain State Park is the most polluted state park though. It's really a shame because its a beautiful area. I don't really understand that much though. We don't have a lot of big factories and whatnot around here. Perhaps it comes down from New York and other large northern cities and gets trapped here??

the inland empire has em all the time, damn san fernando valley funnels LA's crap right up to san berardino and Riverside. I remember goinng to shoreline to see the dead once, driving up the central valley and the farms there were burning all thier harvested fields and all the smoke was blowing south. I laughed and thought it was appropriate for LA to get it from someone else!!!! Is the smog in SD as bad as LA? I rember being on foothill blvd near alta dena and the smog was so bad I could actually not see the mountain. ( foothill blvd is at the foot of the mountain) that was summersolstice 1991. smog is the thing I like least about going home to visit, well actually the traffic out there is the worst, but the smog makes my lungs hurt. when you live there you get used to it, but coming back always chunks up my lungs.

I have a smog day everyday here in this room when i light up a cigar but i love it:p On a serious matter though, it's the smog that causes so many health propblems these day's and it does make it hard for people to breath. A very sad situation indeed.:(
