so, I was in greek lessons, and the teacher startet talking of the ancient greek prefixe "hipp", meaning "horse", and that we still use in french, and some english words (hippopotamus-sp?) and prolly other languages...

My question is, does the word "hippy" have anything to do with it?
Did the person who found the word was thinking of this......

How the heck was "hippy" created??????????

if you have ANY idea.............it's welcome! ;)

well... what about being 'hip' and someone who is hip is a hippie? I don't know where hip came from, but it's probably one of the so many words that's created because of its sound... someone thought hip sounded hip... if you know what I mean. and the word for horse is hippos... well, in nominative

The word Hip was a slang word to describe the Beat generation, as being in the know..they are Hip/ Hipsters.. as the new generation moved in they being younger were call hippies..there are hundreds of words that are used daily that is not in the dictionary, like "ite"=alright or 's'up'= what is up.. or witchadicha= you did not bring" it with you did you."

wasn't hippie a slang term at first for people who listened to rock n roll in the 60s?

    Hipp is from horse.
That could work, as horses are the freest, purest, most beautiful creatures on this planet, as any GOOD hippy should be.

well, if you want to relate two things, it's never too hard.
Imagine the word "hippo" meant a tree, or a stone or just the bone hip

tree: they're environmentalists, love green, rave parties and nature
stone: they're stoned all the time
the hip bone: They're half naked and dance all the time, use drugs and have a balanced diet, you can count their hips! (well, this was the most ridiculously determinist one but as an example it works)

I don't eithier, but it's quite funny really.

Hippy was just a media creation to label people with a 'hippy attitude/lifestyle' a derivative of 'hip' as far as I know.

    Yer both Key-rect....

The press labeled us "hippies" in the 60's because of the catch phrase most of us used to reply to almost everything... i.e.:

Fang: "Hey man, did you know that we're bein' called Hippies now?"

    Sasha: "I'm hip, man!"

We called ourselves "Freaks". The term freak came about from visiting the Free Clinic on the NE corner of Haight/Ashbury. Like we would get together and look for something to do. Someone would say; "Hey man, let's go down to the Free Clinic to see who's sick."

Please say: Free Clinic 5x's fast... see what I mean?

"Freaks of America... It Can happen here."

no! "hippies" was actually a negative word titled to the people who called themselves 'the beautiful people' but it got so over-used in the media that the 'hippies' in later generations adopted it for themselves period. It originally had a negative connotation
