I dont know how many of you are from texas, and dont know if you heard, but...they are trying to pass a law( and it looks like it will pass) kids, in elementary school, through high school, to put their mass body index on their report cards, so parents will know if there kid is overweight? am i alone in thinking, that could be quite embarassing for the kid at school?! instead of talking about what grades they made, they will be talking about how fat they are?! peace to all
This came up on my afwives site, and so far everyone thinks it's a horrid idea. It's one thing to want the overweight kids to get healthier, be active, eat right and all. But as mean as kids are usually to each other, I just see this turning out horribly. Imagine! The bully kids will have even more ammo! Imagine if you were a bully, picking on others for the way they looked, then your school starts sticking your stats on there as if it's another grade?? They aren't going to see it as anything but "fatty fatty fat fat, you got an F for FAT!" I can hear it now.
yeah, it would be one thing if they backed it up with some real action towards teaching the kids nutrition as well as kicking out the soda/snack vendors and shutting down those mini greasy snackbars alot of schools have. I bet they won't though but they'll still put that stupid bmi on there. What a stupid plan. Looks to me like another 'band-aid' approach to give the appearance that something's being done when they're not doing shit.
how contridictive can one be? how could you put at risk humiliating a kid in front of all his peers, yet still let them eat junk food, and get sodas inbetween classes?! I mean if you want to prove a point, make more mandatory health and nutrition classes, and stress the point of eating right. Or to comprimise, atleast send a seperate letter to the kids house, explaining the situation, to hand that out in school, with a kids friends around, would be cruel.
