One can only imagine what the neocons have planned for North Korea.

As it is, we have been hearing almost incessant neocon rhetoric regarding Iran and Syria, which have long been on the neocon hitlist.

Let's see how the neocons will use this news in the coming weeks/months to now justify an invasion of North Korea as well -- also a long-standing target on their hitlist.

    Can anyone smell WW III?

    North Korea claims nuclear weapons
Pyongyang pulls out of six-nation talks

    Thursday, February 10, 2005 Posted: 0702 GMT (1502 HKT)

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea's government says it's pulling out of six-nation talks on its nuclear program and has admitted for the first time that it has nuclear weapons.

A statement from the North Korean foreign ministry says the country's nuclear weapons are "for self-defense to cope with the Bush administration's evermore undisguised policy to isolate and stifle the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)."

The communist state says it feels "compelled to suspend" participation in six-nation nuclear talks "for an indefinite period."

Since 2003, the United States, the two Koreas, China, Japan and Russia have held three rounds of talks aimed at persuading the North to abandon its nuclear weapons development in return for economic and diplomatic rewards.

But no significant progress was reported in those talks, all hosted by China, North Korea's last remaining major ally.

A fourth round of talks scheduled for last September did not take place because North Korea refused to attend, citing what it called a "hostile" U.S. policy.

Earlier this month, U.S. President George W. Bush and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun agreed to push for an early resumption of the six-nation talks.

But Pyongyang called Bush's call for the spread of freedom in his January 20 inaugural speech as a diabolical U.S. scheme to turn the world into "a sea of war flames."

"In his inauguration speech, Bush trumpeted that 'fire of freedom will reach dark corners of the world.' This is nothing but a plot to engulf the whole world in a sea of war flames and rule it by imposing a freedom based on power," North Korea's state-run Pyongyang Radio said on February 4.

Following Bush's second-term inauguration and his State of the Union speech, the United States and its allies are quickening their diplomatic maneuvers to restart talks to end the two-year-old standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons programs.

Hopes for the resumption of six-way talks increased after Bush refrained from using harsh words against the isolated North during the State of the Union address. Analysts had said the North would wait to see what Bush said about it in that speech before deciding to rejoin nuclear talks.

In his inaugural address, Bush did not mention North Korea by name. But he said U.S. efforts have lit "a fire in the minds of men.

"It warms those who feel its power, it burns those who fight its progress and one day this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world," he said.

In his State of the Union address, Bush only briefly mentioned North Korea, saying Washington was "working closely with governments in Asia to convince North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions."

Bush's tone was in stark contrast to his speech three years ago, when he branded North Korea part of an "axis of evil" with Iran and Iraq. It raised hopes for a positive response from North Korea.

    "neocons"? Gimme a break.
"You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you
    Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold"

Do you feel safer w/every Tom/Dick/Harry owning nuclear weapons?
I'm certainly glad one of us does.

You might want to put a hold on the 'Henny Penny' crap until the Chinese have had the chance to twist/break a coupla of arms.

I don't believe the Chinese want WWIII any more than we do...

I think WWIII is inevitable given the global tensions that prevail in our world. I think peace can only be found after the resolution of all existing global tensions. The tension itself is created through the co-existence of disparate ideologies and modes of operation in different states. They are so disparate that only war can help bring them to compromise.

They may or may not have them. Claiming to have several nuclear weapons serves as bargining leverage for the next rounds of talks - if there are any. The best way verifying North Korea has nukes if they conduct a nuclear test. Not having a test could indicate either they don't desire expending a nuclear device when they don't have a replacement. Or they never had nuclear weapons in the first place.

This puts China in an awkward position. China desires to become a major world power. They have the economy and population to be one. Towards this end they are building a $60 billion dollar dam/hydro electric plant accross the Yangtze river. During the course of the last 10 or so years they have begun to accept a market economy. This so called market economy is being implimented on their terms. They also consider Taiwan a breakaway province. They want to return it to its fold.

Any thing North Korea does to screw China's ambitions up will be met with less than enthusiastic support. China has much more to loose than they did in 1950. Since Tien Amin Square massacre, they have less in common with North Korea.

Condi Rice claimed that the gov't has no plans to attack N. Korea. If you believe anything that that Uncle Tom says then I know of some really nice bridges for sale.

North Korea, in between bites of a sandwich made from US supplied food aid, said they had built nuclear weapons.

Conclusion? America is bad! Fear America!

Maybe if the US allied itself with North Korea some people here would finally wake up and realise just how bad a regime it is.

I wouldn't expect WWIII any time soon - I personally don't think the US will attack N.Korea, not because lying Rice says so, but because the US doesn't attack people who can actually fight back. N. Korea may be broke, but they've thrown all the money they DO have into building up a sick badass army and collecting awful weapons.

I highly doubt WWIII will happen in the next few years, and certainly not over North Korea. If you think that George Bush has any political capital (or even desire) to attack North Korea, then you know very little about foreign affairs. But I guess that's obvious every time you talk about the illuminati.

You highly doubt a lot of things because you think you know the answer to everything, when in fact you're just a kid that is all talk.

Don't ever try to think for yourself, either.

Obviously Bush and the neocons (your pals) have a lot to gain from an invasion of North Korea. If not, then why did Bush mention them as part of his PNAC-inspired "Axis of Evil"?

North Korea is most definitely on the menu. It's not a matter of if but when.

If Iran or North Korea are attacked, there is a very good possibility that China might back them up, and yes, that very well could trigger a world war. I am not the only one that has been saying this. Many geopolitical analysts have as well.

But since you don't read and are not informed like I am, you would not know.

Because he's a cowboy? Because he thinks they're evil? Because he wants to appear tough? There's a whole slew of reasons why he'd label them as part of his axis of evil.

North Korea has nuclear weapons. Therefore, no invasion will be forthcoming.

Iran is a little more likely to be attacked, but I'd say there's less than a 50-50 chance of that too. The US military is simply stretched too thin at the present time.

No they don't, don't be stupid. Anyone with a brain will tell you that China considers North Korea to be a national embarassment, and would definitely prefer to be friends with the United States than with North Korea. In the extremely unlikely scenario that the United States attacked North Korea, if China did anything, it would be to move against Taiwan...not to fight the United States in Korea again.

Since my family is constantly in contact with reporters and the people calling the shots in Washington, and you are not, you would not know.

I was referring primarily to Iran.

    Like who?

Most reporters are nothing more than paid liars. Same holds true for politicians.

Just a question...for a long while, the reason I heard China hasn't retaken Taiwan is because they lack a deep water fleet. Not only they have to get men and material accross 100 miles of Ocean (the Taiwan Straight, East China Sea, and South China Sea) but they must also overcome very formable island defenses. Has that changed? Does China currently have a deep water fleet?

China has indeed been gearing up for war with Taiwan for a few years now, so I would assume that would include a fleet. Militarily, I think China is capable of invading and annexing Taiwan (assuming little assistance from the United States) any time they want. The main reason China hasn't yet attacked Taiwan, in my opinion, is because of the diplomatic catastrophe it would cause with the United States. But since they (correctly) perceive the United States as being very militarily weak at the present time, and see this as their rapidly closing window of opportunity, they may try to take advantage of the situation. The Chinese are also wagering that any outrage from the democratic first-world will quickly quiet down and there won't be any serious repercussions for their actions.

Why would China intervene if the United States decided to attack Iran? Yes, Iran is a trading partner of China...but the United States is a much bigger trading partner. For most of the past century, China has been uninterested in the world outside of its perceived borders (with the exception of Korea during the Cold War). It certainly isn't an imperial power. I don't see any reason why China would suddenly decide to help Iran or hurt the United States, if it came to a conflict between the two.

    People you've heard of.

Yeah, you can only trust those internet tabloids and the National Enquirer, right? Most reporters are scrupulously honest, because they'll quickly find themselves out of work if they aren't.

You'll probably be surprised to know that what they say on-the-record and what they say off-the-record are often two very different things. Most politicians are more honest about their beliefs and plans when they're around people they know. Politicians aren't some overmind entity...they're human beings.

Why do they need humanitarian aid if they have the cash to develop nuclear weapons?

Why should they feed their people when foreign aid is willing to do so? This leaves them room to bloat their military and develop a nuclear program.

    Wow, you've really convinced me...

It actually usually seems to be the other way around. As a matter of fact, reporters who are extremely honest find themselves out of a life.
