look at more modern artists, like Litchensteain, he took a lot of his inspiration from comic strips.
Also typical really but Warhol, used bright colours and repatition to break the image away from its iconic relationship... so marylin monroe was no longer a tv screen icon.. that image of her is now an icon for andy warhol if anything. He was interested in masproduction and repatition.
Rothko as mentioned above is interested in emotions created by colours and how certain colours alongside another certain colour can create a deep emotion in the onlooker, he did colour fields, huge canvases of just colour.
arg my minds blank this is so bad.

one sec lemme go look in my books.
A very new artist whos works just becoming bigger (hes a maionstream artism selling in art shops) Is George Ioannou, again reproduces images of iconic figures in monocoliurs but using different shades of the colour.

Jason Kronenwald creates "gum blondes" hes not a painter more a sculptor, he created "paintings" out of cheming gum and has a range of blonde girls like sarah Michelle Gellar and Britany Spears.

Kareem Iliya is a fashion artist, she crates almost sillhouetes of people but with crazy dye effects :)

Chris Ofili uses vibrant bright colours and uses collage of glitter, magazine cut outs of things like Bums and has even Used Elephant dung but his images are VERY brightly coloured
