Amid impeachment drive, the pro-Trump search for dirt on Ukraine and the Bidens goes on
Those working in common cause with the president's and Giuliani's campaign to get Ukraine to investigate Trump's political opponents are moving ahead.

Ukrainians are still advancing Trump goal of probes into Bidens, 2016

    excerpt:

"Trump has continued to question whether Russia meddled in that race. He's repeatedly brought up — including in his call with Zelenskiy — the debunked conspiracy that a hacked DNC email server ended up in Ukraine to prevent FBI data forensics experts from determining the real hackers' identity.

Giuliani's involvement in Ukraine took form as former special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling and potential Trump campaign collusion was wrapping up. For Giuliani, Trump's personal lawyer, it was an opportunity to undermine any negative conclusions from the Mueller report by discrediting its origins.

He seized in particular on the "black ledger" — secret papers released publicly in 2016 showing $12.7 million in cash payments to Manafort from Yanukovych, Ukraine's pro-Russian former president. The revelation at the height of the 2016 campaign forced Manafort's resignation as Trump campaign manager.

Giuliani, Voloshin and others allege the black ledger was a forgery, even though Manafort acknowledged in his plea deal having raked in some $60 million in Ukraine."

I can't see that. Today he must be having a Kenipshit Fit because a federal appeals court ruled against him. Trump must now turn over eight years of tax, banking, and business records. Adam Schiff is going to put him in prison.

Trump didn't know about it years later.

Trump will ask Supreme Court to take New York tax returns case after losing appeal

    excerpts:

"A federal appeals court ruled Monday that President Donald Trump’s tax returns must be turned over to a state grand jury.

The three-judge appeals panel in New York rejected Trump’s argument that he is immune as president from criminal investigation while in the White House.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is seeking Trump’s corporate and personal tax returns from his accounts as part of a criminal investigation."

"Cohen pleaded guilty last year to several crimes, including campaign finance violations in connection with facilitating the payments to Daniels and McDougals.

Cohen, who is currently serving a three-year federal criminal sentence, is cooperating with Vance’s investigation."

Top Trump advisers have "absolute immunity" from subpoenas, DOJ says — live updates

Impeachment inquiry: Top Trump advisers have "absolute immunity" from subpoenas, DOJ says — live updates

    excerpt:

"Engel argued that since the president's closest advisers "serve as his alter egos," compelling their testimony would "undercut the 'independence and autonomy' of the Presidency."

Cipollone subsequently wrote to William Burck, an attorney for Eisenberg, to inform him of the Justice Department's guidance and to tell him the president "directs Mr. Eisenberg not to appear at the Committees deposition."

Burck cited both letters in his own letter to the committee chairs Monday, saying his client "has no other option that is consistent with his legal and ethical obligations except to follow the direction of his client and employer, the President of the United States."

Burck said Eisenberg would comply with any decision by a federal judge who is currently considering whether Congress can compel White House officials to testify."

Engel or someone in the Trump administration will probably need to cite that claim to a federal judge eventually.

When the President Defies the Supreme Court
What will Trump do if the justices rule against him?
    By Matt Ford
    April 24, 2018

When the President Defies the Supreme Court

    excerpt:

"In the modern era, the court’s prestige and public esteem makes open defiance of the Supreme Court far more difficult. The only example that comes close is when, during the Watergate crisis, Nixon refused to hand over the White House tapes to the special prosecutor, citing executive privilege. When the case reached the high court, its members set aside their ideological differences to write a single unanimous opinion that would force Nixon to turn over the tapes. The justices reportedly feared that any dissents or compromises would cause the president to defy the court. In the end, he did not."

"It’s hard to imagine a more fertile political environment in which Trump could defy the Supreme Court, if he so chooses. In addition to a stable of political allies who would likely agree with him, the president also enjoys a mostly pliant Republican establishment that’s unwilling to rein him in and a powerful media apparatus that reifies his every decision. These conditions could eventually prove dire for the rule of law and the norms that preserve our constitutional order. All that’s needed is a single tweet: “The Supreme Court’s decision is FAKE NEWS. Let’s see them try to enforce it!”"

Fuck the supreme court, they are the ones who insist Arizona cops have the right to bust down any door without a warrant, so long as they say they smell pot, and the ones who upheld the right of the courts to even compel people to testify against themselves. They deserve Donald Duck and I hope he gives them all as much trouble as possible, just like congress, which has rigged our elections and shredded the constitutional protections. Either they will learn to uphold the law, beginning with the constitution, or Donald Duck is just the beginning of their troubles.

Trump, the Fear-Based President, Asks Children to “Build the Wall”
    By Masha Gessen
    November 4, 2019 1:15 P.M.

Trump, the Fear-Based President, Asks Children to “Build the Wall”

    excerpts:

"As Yahoo News reported over the weekend, at this year’s White House Halloween party, children of Administration staff members were greeted with a “Build the Wall” mural on the first floor of the Eisenhower Building. “Build the Wall” was spelled out in block letters that appeared to be cut from construction paper, and the children were instructed to write their names on red paper bricks and add them to the mural."

"Getting scared and scaring others are the animating forces of the Trump Presidency. Its politics are built on fear: of the Democrats who want power and your money; of the élites who exclude you; of the crime that’s coming for you in American cities; and, most of all, of immigrants who will take your job, your children, and your future. The Trump Presidency’s appeal is in how it scares others—by staging military parades with flyovers, by dropping the Mother of All Bombs, but, most of all, by building the wall, staging deportation raids, and separating families in order to frighten people away from this country. The wall is a hideous jack-o’-lantern, rotten and glowing on our doorstep, intended to make imaginary evil spirits even more scared of us than we are of them."

The Senate will acquit as these charges are rather petty. Not serious enough to oust a sitting prez. Also, what’s about to be revealed about what the DOJ and intelligence agencies did to enlist foreign help under the previous administration to hurt the Prez will make it look less serious still.

The Mexican government should encourage their school children to build his wall for him. We could send them snacks.

"Imagine you're an idiot. And imagine you're in congress. But I repeat myself." Mark Twain.

I'm wondering what recourse is available for congress to force those who refuse a subpoena--to punish them for doing so? Is subpoena power just a joke that can be ignored? Any teeth at all to them? Or are those that have the power to enforce them, just afraid to do so? I was always under the impression that subpoenas were serious business and that scofflaws to such were subject to being jailed. Evidently in this administration--they mean nothing, which I suppose could set the standard going forward ---that they aren't worth the paper on which they're written.

There is no end of self-loathing in congress, when they can't even decide whether they have the authority to demand evidence and testimony in even the most dire circumstances involving national security. Fuck em all, Donald Duck is destroying the republican party and, hopefully, he will shatter the democrats as well.
