this is going to sound wierd, but what in the hell is homecoming? It doesnt exist up here in canada...I always see mention of it in American media, tv shows movies etc. I have basicly ignored it, as its just that thing kids do down in the states.
I live in the US and have been wondering the same thing for years. So out of place here. What the fuck is it? Did somebody come home? They have a parade and a dance...it seems to be for the local high schoolers. They call it home coming, but whatever it means has slipped my grasp.
Traditionally it's the first sports game at the home field after a string of "away Games" or those played at other schools... It's all bullshit of course...
It's when the alumni of a school "come home" to their alma mater for a celebration of the school and its traditions. It started in the 19th century in the U.S. The final parade in the Movie Animal House took place during the fictional Faber College homecoming event.

my old college has an alumni association..but it dosnt do much other than get me discounts at a few places lol. im feeling nostalgic at the moment.. im missing going for after class beers at the on campus pub.
Not only that, but the first home game is usually played against some lower string school, with the hope the home team scores a victory. Ahead of all the parades, parties, dances and rental of formal wear that drives up local economies in small towns. I went to two different high schools and in both cases the Homecoming game was a consolation prize for having such a suck-ass set of season opening loses. Since they couldn't play good football, the school does the next best thing and holds a pageant! Then they select the best looking couple from the yokels and crown them as Homecoming royalty. At sunrise it's all forgotten as the various cheap hotels have the walk of shame closing pageant................ Then the pictures start circulating and getting posted.
thats another big difference....no one really cares about high school sports up here. I played both rugby and football up here, its rare to see more than few friends or family members of athletes at games. junior hocky teams can get small crowds, but nothing like in the states
I stood up my date for homecoming. I didn't know how to dance... So I just didn't pick her up and went out with my friends. I was such a fucking douche for doing that. Total facepalm moment. That was when I was selling doses in high school of course or it wouldn't be homecoming. Later in life, I learned by mimicking my girlfriend's brother who could dance. I could imitate dancing at least well enough to go out to raves. I never got good. My feet still are pretty lazy, but I can do the arms ok. And I learned the Melbourne shuffle, sort of... I can never move fast enough for that one!
Our teams always suck, I think primarily because all of the players are just spoiled, cocksure brats. It's too bad we don't have some ghetto players to turn up the intensity a bit.
