Stoned Festivus For The Rest of Us

Was looking online at what this used music store in Columbus had listed this morning and spotted a set of 4X12 speaker cabinets... Top cabinet was listed at $99.00... Bottom was $129. So I looked up the specs/materials/construction quality, because the brand can be iffy. "B-52". Mostly stuff made in China, some good, some not so good. Some guys are spastic about the amps for some reason, but I've never played one.

Turns out these things are made better than a Marshall cabinet, structurally, and with better hardware, Baltic Birch plywood, the works. Different speakers though, B-52 branded, 120 watt each times 4. Each cabinet is rated at 480 watts handling capability. (nobody has that much power to throw at these things, full stack can handle 960 watts.) But they aren't the coveted "Vintage Celestions" that guys can't make up their minds as to which "Vintage Celestions" are "better" than the other ones.... Guitar guys are weird. But these B-52 speakers actually sound great.

So I ended up getting the full stack for $89 (discounted) plus $129 for the bottom cabinet (newer) = $218 out the door... I had a $35 store credit, so actually $183 out of pocket. They cleaned up fine, aren't in bad shape, some dings here and there, all typical of used gear... They have seen the inside of a few bars.

If it were a Marshall it would have been $399 or more for the top cabinet, and you never see used bottom cabinets... I think most guys get only the top cabinet and run a halfstack.... "Top cabinets" have the top two speakers angled pointing upwards for better"sound dispersion"... It's actually so those top two speakers don't take your head off if you have a full stack, but these are things they won't tell you... Have I said Guitar guys are weird?


So, anyways... There's another full stack waiting for the studio to be finished. Not sure which amp I'll be using with it... I'll be doing auditions next week.

I'm no expert and all I've learned in the last three years is thanks to living with someone who has been growing longer than I've been alive... Even he didn't know some stuff that I did. No one ever knows it all. Took multiple sources on the internet backing me up to make him accept that though : )

People get too fixated on whatever they think is the One True Way. Plants want to grow. At the end of the day they're doing most of the work themselves.
