Hi, One month in counting until I touch down in Amsterdam. I still haven't reserved a hotel yet because I have a dilemma. If I get a cheap hostel I'll be able to spend my money on recreation.

But I've heard tons of horror stories about hostels and I'm concerned about personal safety. I wouldn't want to have my stuff stolen while I'm out there. Which is why I'm considering spending the extra money on a nice Hotel instead?

So in your opinion what's more important?

    BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

I haven't heard any horror stories about hostels and can tell you from my own experience that the several I have stayed in were totally fine. Just keep anything really valuable with you and your clothes and stuff will mostly likely be perfectly safe. The only ppl who are in hostels are other travelers and though it's possible someone could grab your bag as they are leaving I bet this never happens.

What are the dates you're gonna be there? I'm thinking about goin second week in March. Though it seems kinda like a pipe dream. We'll see.

Also many hostels have a safe where you can leave valuables while you are out.

I hear that the Flying Pig hostel is nice for a hostel. My friend stayed there recently and he said it was nice.

I have never stayed in a hostel, I like to pamper myself and stay at really nice places. But I am thinking about heading back with some friends and we will probably try to cheap it and I think we will stay at the flying pig.

I'm the same as you Garf12
I prefer a half decent B&B or Hotel as opposed to a hostel.
Sharing a room with possible loud snorers or hammer-heads
does not appeal to me. Much rather have my own room.
Also, I read somewhere that the safe deposit boxes you
have access to in hostels are not big enough to fit a ruck-sack in.
Although I'm not sure if you can leave your stuff in the reception.
Cheap hotels only cost around 30 to 35 Euros.

I stayed at the last Water Hole and had no problems at all. The bathrooms were rather nasty, but other than that it was fine. You got a locker to store your valuables in as well.

As long as you have a locker, does it really matter where you sleep? Hell, besides sleeping, why would you spend any more time in a hotel than necessary? Go hostel, dude. Sure, there are a few bad ones, but that doesn't mean ALL of them are horrible.

    Coupla points.

There are good hostels and bad hostels. Do a little looking and make a reservation at a good reputible hostel. Flying Pig is one of the best hostels in Europe. I've stayed there twice, it rocks.

There are good hotels and bad hotels. And a bad hotel is frequently very bad. My second trip i stayed in a cheap hotel for 2 nights. I was seriously afraid my stuff would be stolen, maybe by the employees. Oh, yeah, most of the realy cheap hotels are bad ones.

A good "expensive" hostel, like the Flying Pig, is still cheaper than a "cheap" bad
    hotel.

Hostels are very very nice. The Pig, has lockers for everyone, locked rooms, a locked luggage room, and a locked front door. Very safe, well staffed, well lit establishment. Also FREE internet, in house bar(cheap heinekens), smoking lounge that is lit up 24/7, Heneiken vending machine (cause the bar has to close sooner or later), every room has its own bathroom & shower, coffee and bagels in the morning (good ol' continental breakfast), access to a full kitchen, vending machines (munchies 24/7), tourist information center, awesome location, on and on and on...

Best part though are the people. You are worried about sharinga room with some one thoroughly obnoxious but the place is full of hippies. Chock full to the brim, pouring out the windows, full of kind folk. Why would you want to isolate yourself?

The Last Waterhole in the RLD is closed and will not reopen.

The same owners have opened just off Leidseplein the Waterhole, which still has live music 7 nights a week, bar and pool tables. But no longer a hotel/hostel or a coffeeshop. It's still cool to smoke there. http://www.waterhole.nl/

skip the hostels and don't play the poor young hippy scene. most (not all) hostels are nasty like the above mentioned bathrooms and people can be loud and rude. if you can afford a plane ticket to a-dam then you should be able to afford a 1 or 2 star hotel. the smoke is cheap enough over there

I can't help but think that the people downing the hostels have either A) never stayed in one or B) had one bad experience and never stayed in one again. Frankly, given the choice at the same price, I would stay in a hostel. All the people you want to meet, right there. New friends and a very welcomeing environment.

Maybe i got lucky and got a good hostel. Or maybe i intentionally avoided the sleezy run down hostels ;-)

    A. iv'e stayed in plenty of hostels before when I was a poor hippy, lived in europe for 7 years B. why would anybody want to share a communal bathroom NASTY!!!! C. you can meet plenty of people every where else. so you don't need hostels for that. anyone who would spend the same amount for a hotel and choose a hostel instead doesn't know what their talking about or never used a hotel lol

The 2 times ive been, ive stayed at the Sofitel, new place. This year though have to stay cheaper, I booked a 2 star hotel for 7 days for about $950 US. Pricey but I couldnt find too many hotels with rooms during queens day.

I too like to stay in nice places whenever possible.
    Looking foward to April.

    peace
