They should throw the book at him. This kind of thing is counter productive.

It's a really sad point right now in human history where being a victim is so cherished and marveled upon, that people WANT to be victims so badly that they'll fake a story. When I was a kid, being a victim meant you were weak. What would've been a more badass story for Jussie Smollet to fabricate, would be if he was out in the streets in subzero temperatures and he rescued an Arabic Muslim woman from having her hijab pulled by two Trump supporters in red hats by kicking their asses. Make yourself a hero, not a victim.

Smollet is more of a victimizer than a victim. He victimized everyone who hates Trump who took his story and wanted to believe it. He also victimized everyone who was a REAL victim of a hate crime in the past, and everyone who will be a victim of a hate crime in the future. Because their hate crime accusations won't be taken as seriously in the future.

Yes indeed, America is such a racist country. So racist that you have to hire black Nigerians to play the part of white racists in a hate crime you commit against yourself.

I'm not convinced. If there was no hate crime, why is Smollett claiming that there was? I'm thinking that, if nothing else (big if too), this is indicative of the larger systemic issue.

It's really hard to feel bad for this particular guy. He's a successful Hollywood actor. That makes people hate him.

I'm also wondering if there are charges against Jussie, why we don't have more information about the case. If there's no ongoing investigation, then there's nothing to keep police from speaking out.

Understandable. Lots of people want to believe stories that fit their narrative no matter what. Be there evidence, or lack thereof.

He's claiming there was a hate crime against him because in this society, being a victim will get you more famous points. If he can portray his political opponents as racists, he can hopefully score more points for his political allies.

Jussie fucked up and will be dealt with appropriately; as will U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant Christopher Paul Hasson a self-identified white nationalist who was
arrested after federal investigators uncovered a cache of weapons and ammunition in his Maryland home.

Hasson called for “focused violence” to “establish a white homeland”

Sounds like a typical trump supporter to me.

What does that have to do with this case, though?

If it turns out that he faked this, and so far it seems like he did, then I hope he is convicted and punished.

He has given white supremacists and extremists a perfect case to point at and yell 'fake news' the next time something real actually happens, and has done significant harm to movements fighting for people of colour and those in the LGBT community.

I think he posted it as a reaction to the smugness in this thread and using this to score political points

"Oh look at all the NPCs who think political violence exists on the right side of the political spectrum. It doesnt, idiots!"
Is basically what I interpreted from some of the posts in this thread

When in actuality right wing violence is still the biggest terrorist threat in the US. And cry wolf cases are always touted as a poor attempt to disprove that, but it doesnt change the facts.

    LOL!

First man flips off second man and wife (free speech), second man chases first man down and flips him off in return (assault* and free speech), first man "stands his ground" after being pursued by pulling out legally held concealed weapon, then returns it to his holster. Wife also has concealed gun in her purse. Second man claims his best friend is black.

You can't make this stuff up.
Sounds like all involved are loony. A good reason to put tighter restrictions on gun ownership.

    * battery refers to the actual bodily contact, whereas assault refers to a credible threat

I saw the news this morning. Apparently the police have the check Smollett wrote to the two brothers. I was previously not convinced that the story was made up. Now I can see that it was.

I do think however that we are all too ready to let these sorts of crimes slip through the cracks. Before police had provided substantiation there were those already condemning the falsehood of it all. I feel like despite it being false it places the blame in the correct categories however.

  19. The blame for what? And how does the fact that it's false allow any blame to be assigned "in the correct categories"??? This was all on Smollett, there was no oppression delivered onto him by anyone else. This whole thing came from his mind alone.

I'd like to know what he was trying to accomplish with this stunt. What if he had carried it off? Would he have "had" to roll over on two innocent white guys after the cops lined them up for him? And what about his lying about the race when he was in a neighborhood that has barely any white people let alone republicans apt to run around in MAGA hats?

Why does THIS lying asshole get a pass on trying to stir up trouble between races? Really, what's special about this guy?
