Hi, I'm trying to visit Amsterdam on March 12-16 with a friend from school. We have a package rate of airfare plus hotel that looks like a great deal, but I was wondering about the place we'd be staying. It's called Beursstraat. Beursstraat 7, 1012 Jt, Amsterdam is what I have for an address. I know it's pretty close to Central Station, but I don't know how to find that on, say, this map - http://www.amsterdam.info/print/map/ Can anyone help out a bit with that? And, I see some of the streets near Central Station listed as areas to avoid at night. Is it really all that bad? I assume getting around from there will be simple enough, am I wrong? We're interested in just about everything, coffee shops, museums, nightlife, the whole bit. It'd be great if someone with the inside scoop could fill me in. Thanks.
www.channels.nl/amsterdam/beursho.html On this map Beurstraat is where the word "Stones Cafe" is. www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/General/Map.html There's no problem walking around at night. It's very safe.
Like Moondance said, it's very safe in Amsterdam. The worse thing you will probably get is being pestered by drug addicts around the Red Light District, everyone does and it's almost impossible to avoid them. Don't even acknowledge them in any way and keep walking without uttering one word. I would say though that the Centrum can get a little intimidating after 2 to 3 onwards in the morning. Just avoid unlit dark alleys and the like.
