i feel exacly the same way u do. its like im stuck in one of the biggest dirtiest cities in the world,L.A. u dont know how many times ive thought about taking a tent and just walking into the forest, the only reason i havent is cause i dont want to be alone.

DONT GIVE up your dream, it is tottally righteous, you just need others to join you, to create a new and old way of life, i definitly would be the first 2 join u, if we all join together the fences can be torn down,(or jumped over) and tribalism and true freedom can one day exist again in america

You know what people... this is crazy. I could have written every post here by myself because it all matches me so perfect.

I am done with society for awhile. I need a break and have been working on plans for a year or more long journey around the United States. I plan to hike, rock climb, canoe, mountain bike... pretty much anything I can do to get back in to nature. I intend to plan and save for another year then off I go for a life altering quest for serenity. I was hoping to find another person interested and financially capable to come along, but it's going to be tough. I do plan to travel by vehicle, but intend to find free camping and stay at travel centers. I plan to drive no more then 2 or 3 hours between locations before settling and visiting the area for a day or however long. This is the general idea, but I still have a year of planning to work it all out.

Now, after reading all these posts here, it seems there are plenty of people wanting to do something similiar. Has anyone considered combining all of our resources and traveling in a small group? Between the lot of us we should have an expedition level group. I love to find great locations to visit and plan things out so I'd make a great navigator and I like to photograph things also. I'm sure we have someone here that is a great nutritionist who could keep the group healthy. I imagine we have a writer or two who could document everything. Somone probably knows a lot about fitness who could keep us all strong.

Who's with me here? Anyone willing to consider this?

I understand where you are coming from Lotus. However, I don't have that level of ambition to just head off barefoot and broke. Also, how do you expect me to carry my climbing gear, bike, canoe and whatever else, all on my back? I plan to actually do things wherever I visit. The price of renting that stuff is outrageous and would quickly add up to more then it cost to buy it and I already have the climbing gear. I'm not planning to dissappear in to nature, just planning to get more in to it. I'd much prefer to have reasonable shelter and reasonable food during my trip as well. I don't want be too tired and starved all the time. This may not be the grand idea of a minimalist, but to me it is because I will only have the stuff I plan to use. It's not gonna be luxury by any means, but it's not gonna be miserable either. At least I hope not!

I've been on the road and living outside for years. The biggest complaint I have about it is there are so few people out here for the same reasons I am. Most of the people I meet living like I do are homeless due to drugs, alcohol, mental illness.

I meet a few people here and there who are living this way because they don't want to buy into the system, wanna find something better.

Still, everytime I chuck whatever I've got going on and stick my thumb out I'm already there.

Nothings free in the sense that everything takes effort, but there are plenty of days on the road when I eat, bathe, and even get on the internet for free.

oooh! freedom is amazing! in the summer me n my best mate camped out for a week. we wandered around all day, chilled, smoked weed, washed in rivers... That was the most amazing week of my life! we hardly saw another human being! just the odd rambler... wow. try it! find a really remote country spot and set up camp... make sure ur hidden, away from roads and preferably near a (clean) river. its amazing! total detox! of course theres the risk of being shot by an angry land-owner but heyy! its worth the risk!
I really wanna start up a hippie tribe! wow! anyone wanna join!? lol. pretty far-fetched but it would be awesome. heh heh... peace out... be happy x emily x x x x x

Man that all sounds good. But I have a daughter that I can't leave with no father. I Live in MI so I have plenty of places to get away. I have Been looking into building an earthship type dwelling. You know become totally self sufficient. I figure why pay for something I can do myself. I.E. electricity, heat, water, food etc. I think true freedom comes through not needing the system to survive. SO if you do it while traveling or being in one place man it's the same idea. It'll be a couple of years before i have my abode but anybody traveling through MI would be more than welcome to the hospitality of my house. either now or later.

I would love to live in the middle of the forest, get away from society. Freedom is something we all want, but barely nobody can reach.

sounds like you want to live in the days before modern civilzation with the native Americans in like a tribal setting....sounds good to me. You should go see if you can spend a week among the American Indians in South Dacota. Might jsut give you a taste of that pre-asphalt life.

This is all I think about and I am preparing to do it. I have restored a antique travel trailer with a 51 chevy restored custom pickup. I am going to take off and live in the many national parks all over the country. I dont know how long I can last but It will be fun finding out. My girlfriend cant wait to leave either. The only hold up is waiting till my daughter goes to college.5 years and counting. There are problems though, our wonderful gov. is trying to make full time campers establish somekind of residency. They cant stand the fact someone can live without paying all there bullshit fees. As long as you have a vehicle it has to be registered somewhere, drivers license, insurance, what do you put for an address on your tax return U.S.A. that would freak them out. What happened to freedom to live how you want without the government being in all your business. I will have my own power generator, solar panels, water filtration system, and virtually no bills. I hope it works out.
