right on what i don't understand, as a scientist, is how we have figured out some of the basic dogma type things that we know. like that hydrogen has 1 proton, 1 neutron and 1 electron..how to draw molecules so that we can actually talk about them. or the composition of a star...who figures this shit out?! i guess i could look up the answers to all that, but what i'm trying to get at is how smart someone has to be to make breakthroughs like these. all through my education i found myself questioning things...like how do we fuckin know that oxygen has 4 valent electrons? well it makes 4 chemical bonds...or two double bonds. but how do we fuckin KNOW that part of it? probably because of x-ray images or something, which is another layer of a crazy invention by another genius. we have actually gathered a ton of knowledge about the universe as a species, and each of us more-or-less average people have access to all of this information that's been acquired over generations, but like the post above says.....we don't know shit
but yeah....the dog thing. i kind of agree i loved my dogs as a kid, but i lived where they had space to run free outside, and they LIVED outside. i'm not about having a dog in my house. but obviously, tons of people like it - they're probably not ALL mental one of my cars is an SUV. we have two kids...what do you want? could always rock a mini-van
once we alter our ability to observe in greater detail, many of our theories, or even 'solidly known knowledge' goes out the window. and there's times that oxygen can have trivalent bonds even. some of these occurrences are so rare as to be 'virtually' nonexistent, and in fact the exception rather than the rule.. but they still have to be accounted for.
So was Meagain's entire post a satire of The God Delusion ? I've never read Dawkins, maybe I should. I cant have satire flying over my head like that
hey, I like my minivan (even as a single dude) rip out the seats, toss em in the garage, go camp whenever I want and never have to worry about the tent falling on my head.
i learned to drive on a mini-van. and one of my friends used to drive one in high school so that was funny the thing i wouldn't like about a minivan though is the low clearance. i mean, my car has low clearance too. but if we are talking about camping and stuff, that's where an SUV is good. or a truck would probably be better
yeah, but 6'6" - I like my legroom. trucks may have it, but then I'd have to do a camper shell or popup, and suv's (least that I've sat in) are built for hobbits.
the only thing I'm certain of is just exactly how certain or uncertain I am of anything, and even that, I have questions about.
My friend in high school had an 84 Plymouth minivan, and we named it The Beast as an inside joke. I learned how to drive in a ‘43 army Jeep from WWII.
I don't know how Richard Dawkins got into this thread..... Anyway, I never said I hate dogs...dogs are dogs, no reason to hate a dog unless they bite you, and even then no reason as they're just being a dog. What I can't understand is why perfectly reasonable adults find they need a dog around the house for no reason other than emotional support. And some dress them up in clothes, let them sit on their laps at the diner table, and organize their life around them. Strange.
I don't disagree with any of this. I mean I get having a pet... I'm a cat guy myself... But I have found a lot of dog owners are irresponsible with their animal and sort of assume we all love their dog as well. PS: If you allow your dog to jump all over people you're doing it wrong.
I've had two German shepards, two mutts, and a standard poodle...but I never put clothes on them or took them everywhere I went. And they were never caged. I don't have any dogs now as they're too much of a bother.
Oh so it wasnt satire I'm back to my original stance then Dogs are cool companions I do agree people who treat them like children are weird
I understand the desire for animal companionship but I HATE all the crap that capitalism has entered into the equation. All the energy consumption and resources involved. Plastic toys. Dog clothes. Not to mention a great number of dog owners are entirely set on humanising the dog and I think for the relationship to be healthy the human needs to go a bit dog.. Especially in communication with it.
