Of course. He caught hell from both sides. This is one of those rare issues on which some liberal women agree with social conservatives. There's no consensus along political lines.

Many people played a role in the sexual revolution, but none bigger than his. With his intellect and writing ability, he could have made big money with some magazine that was far less controversial, but he remained true to his personal values and passions. I have a lot of respect for that.

I think a lot of people have forgotten just how repressive American culture was in 1953. Pretty much anything you couldn't do in church or in front of your mother was illegal. Sex was supposed to be in the dark, under the covers, missionary position, only to make a baby. It took some balls to stand up to all that repression.

Have you read any of Hef's editorials? He often wrote brilliantly, passionately, and articulately in favor of personal freedom, including the legalization of most recreational drugs. He was inspired by great liberal and libertarian writers of his time, and often published their articles in the magazine. Norman Mailer was a favorite.

That was just his personal preference. My wife doesn't look like that. Not important to his legacy.

 

Sadly the age factor was a major obstacle - but one wonders, How much of a popular vote would he have received if he'd gone up against Trump?

Even in his heyday, I doubt he was having sex with most of them, and even the ones he did he would have to shower with a ridiculous amount of gifts first


Some of those playboy bunnies themselves are the smart ones, a couple million a year maybe, and they'd only have to put out 2,3 times, the rest of the time just sit around and yapp and never have to work

Before the internet, unless you lived in a large city with some sort of underground newspaper, Playboy was the best and most reliable connection to counterculture thinking, on a national and international level.

She had already signed away all her rights to those photos before he bought them, so he didn't owe her any money. Anyway, he didn't have any cash left at that point. He had to mortgage his house to get the first issue of the magazine published. No bank would loan him anything because they didn't approve of his liberal moral values and didn't think his magazine had any chance of success.

Also, I don't know if you noticed the brunette hanging around with him in that linked TV show footage. That's Barbie Benton. They lived together for several years.

At that time, in most states, it was still illegal to live with someone without being married. Nobody in the media world was speaking out more strongly against such laws than Playboy. Nearly all well-known magazines and newspapers were still promoting a conservative, church-oriented view of such things.

 

The guy was a scum. As someone else mentioned, he took nudes of Marilyn Monroe and used them without her consent, never giving her any money,

He posted nudes of Brook shields as a child...Sketch.

He set up cameras all over his mansion and used the tapes as possible blackmail against everyone who did the deed in his house.

He basically paid his gfs an allowance, btw and one girl who got breast enlargements, back when that was a new operation suffered after they burst. He could not care less and dumped her soon after.

 

I just recently read that Brooke Shields was in playboy when she was 10 years old and fully naked! WTF? Her mother gave consent for this.
