Thankfully, most people would NEVER be in this situation. So.

Actually, wasn't there a thread asking whether or not vegetarianism/veganism is of privilege? It is weird that mostly white people are the ones who choose this lifestyle. Though, I'm pretty sure some indigenous groups are plant based.

The way you said it to me wasn't insulting. The way you said it to him/her was insulting.

    Go educate yourself

Go read the articles I linked and come back and tell me there isn't further education available there not considered or denied in this thread

It's all in the way you say things.

See my thread entitled "meat eaters" in the "living on the earth" forum section

Many people take what they choose to eat as a very personal thing that is unassailable. As far as people making awful jokes about eating meat in front of a vegetarian... just chalk that up to plain and simple good old dumb assery. Nothing more.

I can't deny meat had healthy things in it. There is a reason why man eats it. Sure lots of scientists believe it to be important. But first of all you still need to ask the ethical question of it is right now. And you have to admit that meat was not a large part of the diet. So the plants they ate must do something or the meat is so damn fantastic eating it once or twice a month is still enough to evolve the brain.

I will bitch slap modern science in the face lol.

Keep in mind that a person is constructed of many layers that science is not even close to being able to grasp, and what we currently consider science may NEVER be able to grasp.

Food effects a person on many levels. The state a person is in due to the condition of all their parts effects what type of foods they find nourishing or what type of foods they seek out.

Its an interplay of you are what you eat, but also, you eat what you are. By no means does that mean someone who eats meat is less or more evolved than a vegan or vise versa.

We all us should watch "Okja". We can make it a movie night. Of course, due to all the drama this board has... we do need priority seating. But, we totally should do this. Who is going to bring the vegan food and who is going to bring the non-vegan food? Popcorn is a must. Let's just put that out there now.

If we didn't eat chicken, beef, lamb and pork there wouldn't be any such animals around because there would be no financial incentive to keep them.

What is of more concern to me is over-fishing and the state of our oceans. The sea is turning into a plastic soup.

Well, animals aren't here just for financial incentive, lol. They live here amongst us.

Okay so you would have a few pretend farms for children and families to visit. But you'd have have to give the animals the snip as they would take over the planet having no natural predators. Although I'm sure plenty of lions and tigers would like to have a go at them.

I don't think the natural predator of chickens, lambs, cows, and pigs are solely humans, though. I'm sure they will be killed and eaten by some other animal. And to be honest, this is all hypothetical... because let's be real humans aren't all going to become meat eaters, just like they're not all going to become plant based eaters. It's like the hypothetical situation NG was giving... about if you were starving you would eat meat. We're not starving, and we probably never will.

I think this is the type of comments that the OP was referring to. It's these hypothetical, emotionally fueled (because like someone else mentioned food and eating is sacred) commentary. There is a difference between having a discussion or debate about this topic, and giving someone you know this hypothetical situation and just in general the third degree... during mealtime.

I do think some of these comments are just jokes, though. It's socially acceptable to make fun of the vegetarian, vegan in your life. A lot of people do it, that it doesn't seem like a big deal. It's not like someone is actually being an asshole. Though, some can be.

I do kind of agree with the OP when they stated that if a vegetarian, vegan were to make commentary against meat eaters... all hell will break loose. Even if it's just a joke. But, at the same time I think it's just because there are more people who eat meat than they're are not. So, it's not that there are more asshole meat eaters than they're are asshole plant based eaters. Or that plant based eaters are these ethnically wise people, lol. It's just that there are more people who eat meat therefore, there are more people who have these comments against plant based lifestyles, diets over comments that are for them. But, it does suck that someone can make these jokes, and even be an asshole to a vegetarian, vegan. But, when the tables are turned... it's a different story.

    Talk about majority rules, lol.

I'm not one of those to mock vegetarians or hold up meat to their face. I was vegetarian some years ago and might consider it again some time.

I think NG's point about the evolutionary importance of eating meat is a bit moot. Yes, perhaps it was once important in human history, but it is no longer essential, nor even necessarily healthy. Wisdom teeth, appendices, and various vistigial organs were also once mandatory for our growth and survival as a species, but are now neutral or a detriment. Evolutionary needs change, and if we are to survive, we adapt to those changes.

My girlfriend at the time was vegetarian. So I went the same for solidarity. Then when we split I couldn't resist my Mum's Sunday roast beef or lamb. Being veggy requires discipline and I generally take the line of least resistance.

Oh, yea. *does the Michael Jackson*
    :D

It seems a lot of things are proven "right" because of evolution, but whenever someone uses that as an arguement... I'm like, you do know we are in 2017 and we are not apes anymore?

I mean no harm, though when I joke like that. It is a sound argument. It's just it can also be debunked, like anything else can be.

    Humans are omnivores...

This doesn't mean I'm gonna cram a steak down anyone's throat that chooses to not eat meat. It's just a fact.

I judge you because you did it for a girl. :D
    I'm kidding.

Well, there are some douchy vegans who think vegetarianism is basically the standard American diet. Actually, the other day... I was researching RT4 veganism, which is Raw til 4. And in one article that I read... the person had the nerve to say that nowadays being a vegan is the standard American diet, because of all the mock meat, vegan junk food, etc. And I was like, that's insulting to meat-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. You go, girl. You be bad. Just an overall bad person, lol.
