I just heard some whiny punk band "singing" John Lennon's Imagine, how the hell did this happen. I thought Yoko was very protective of the rights? Anyone?
I've heard it by country singers back in the late 80s Depends on who owns Imagine's rights: Yoko/the estate or Apple.
fuck yoko....... she sells anything she can get her hands on, seriously. if you are talking about APC doing the cover of imagine, its not some whiny punk band. plus Im really starting to love maynards version over the original.
I did my own cover and recorded it. It's a hell of a lot better than Maynard but that's just my opinion. Tip - sounds great on a 12 string... fingerstyle.
I fear for the future of music if kids are prefering,I'm guessing, Tool, over the classics. But hey, to each thier own opinion. I thought they were whiny, you probably thought they 'kicked ass'. I just hope you can appreciate both in their own respect. At least the main message of the lyrics will reach more people. Although, I find it ironic that today's top-40 groups are singing Imagine. life and love
O.K. first off i love maynard and his work: tool and apc but that song isnt meant to be redone, 2nd now i have to listen to ignorant people go on about the new song imagine without the knowlege of it being a cover let alone john lennon. It just saddens me
The reason why the song was redone was because Manyard felt that when Lennon wrote Imagine he wrote it feeling that this song in particular should be one that people live their life by. It was a song of hope and for peace. Now 30 or some odd years later do you think that Lennon's song has been a staple of how we live our life by now. If you answered yes then you are a moron. APC composed this song in a much more bitter and hopeless way because nothing has changed since Imagine was released and in fact, things have gotten worse.
With APC's version Maynard wanted to make the song darker and less happy because that is what the world has come to.
I think APC's version sucks major ass, but there is much worse music out there. Unrelated, but I just DL'ed The Foo Fighters' cover of "Blackbird", thought that was quite shitty too... But, by far, the worst cover of any song I've ever heard is Nirvana's cover of "The End" (The Doors). After I heard that I wanted to dig up Kurt's body, piss on him, and finally, light his loser ass on fire.
Jim Morrisson was a waste of space and not the deep tragedy some people think. Kurt Cobain was a brilliant songwriter, he was a self pitying waster but was extremely intelligent. I think that ANYONE who covers a Beatle song or Lennon etc should have an axe thrown at their face. There is nothing you can add to a Beatle song so don`t try.
sorry, I must say joe cocker's version of "With a little help from my friends" was leagues above the beatles version. it was grittier and had more soul.
I just listened to APC's cover of Imagine for the first time, and I can say that it's one of the most haunting things I've ever heard. And who are you guys to say that it's destroyed Lennon's message? Even in the original version, there's a saddness in the way Lennon sings it that says that his dream was unattainable in that day, and the same goes for APC's version today.
I personally didn't really care for APC's cover either, but the thing is...Maynard is a true artist, not just some punk kid out there singing other people's songs to make money or gain fame. So with that I can respect him doing the cover. Plus I love TOOL and APC. Maynard is just someone I really respect as an artist.
Yes but putting all that soul into a song like that is laughable, it is not appropriate to screech a song that is at heart a simple song about hanging around with friends. Cocker sings it as if his friends are terminally ill. It is rather over the top, in particular the gospel backing vocals make it sound comical. Imagine someone singing the theme from the Flintstones like that, this is the affect of Cockers version.
