Hi all, I was wondering, in your experiance, which country is the most barefoot friendly?

Now I think the answer to that question is fairly obvious. It's got to be somewhere like Australia or New Zealand. The thing is, with both of them countries, a vast majority of people go barefooted all the time anyway, and so it's a way of life. So lets change the question slightly.

Which non-barefooted-way-of-life country is the more barefoot friendly?

I.e. out of all the countries where barefooting is not 'normal' or a standard way of life, which is the most barefoot friendly?

I think I can tell just from reading some of the posts on this forum that it's obviously not going to be the USA. All the stories of 'NS3' and the problems that people get into - just going down the store, I think it's a real shame.

    Anyway, what do you think?

(I read somewhere that London, England (i.e where I live :D) is very good)

Canada is pretty barefoot friendly. I get some strange looks from time to time but for the most part people seem to be amused.

I think there are plenty of developing countries where people are still quite happy to go barefoot too. I hope that once they get their economies sorted out they dont' suddenly all start wearing shoes just because they can.

Many of these developing countries would keep their cultural norms in tact if the US did not come there and brainwash these people with our stupid customs and make them feel like they have to wear shoes to be civilized and get anywhere in life and in the process they destroy all of what that country was built upon and destroy a culture thats been engraved there for centuries, then theyd be far better off and could continue to go barefoot. Just because a country becomes more industrialized and has more money does not mean they should forget or throw away their past customs. I just hate all these religious nitwits who go to other third world countries and feel these people there need to be "saved" and force them practically to do what they ask or make them look like less of a man or a woman because they dont do what "civilized" culture does. Its one thing to go to a country and teach them a religion or teach them about our country, its another thing to go there and brainwash people and dictate policy and make them look like fools if they dont follow it.

One of the early European explorers who came to America referred to the American Indians as 'savages' because some of them were nude. I forget which explorer this was. After what Europeans did to the American Indians, one has to question who the real savages were.

A fellow teacher associate of mine did a 6 month teacher exchange in China. She spent most of her time teaching in the more country area of China (can't remember the name of the area - where they grow most of their rice) but on her return she said that people were mostly barefoot.

She returned via Hong Kong and noticed that no one was barefoot and the old 3NS signs were around. In fact she was more or less ordered (by an armed official!) to put sandals on when she had to change planes! Now that's a novel way of enforcing the 3NS!!!!

I agree with the comments that wherever the Western Culture (or more U.S. influence??) has touched, the locals shun barefeet as a way of life (even if their past culture reflected it!) Yet I'm not sure which culture introduced the armed officials to inforce 3NS!!

I have lived in a town north of the arctic circle since 1983. It is vary barefoot frendly I go barefoot 24/7 evertwhere during the short but sometimes hot summer up to the 30's(90'sF).I am the only one in this town that go's barefoot outdoors.Up here I gets vary mudy if rains and vary dusty if dry.many public building do not allow shoes they must be removed at the door.During the summer many people ware sandlas outdoors but remove them when they enter a place where shoes are not allowed to keep the floor clean, Like the public library and go barefoot indoors, But many people find it strange that someone would walk barefoot outdoor.I am just a hippie in the Canadian arctic doing my own thing,I don"t care what people say or think about me.
