What Exactly Is A Hippie And Why Am I Not One?

Yes, they exist. I had neighbours who were true hippies. Built their own house in northern Ontario, raised their kids, taught school. Then they retired to an island off the west coast of Canada. The zoning bylaw said you didn't need permission to build a structure that was 140 square feet or less. So they built a house that was 10x14 feet, with a sleeping loft upstairs. They were off the grid, heated with wood, and used solar panels to charge their laptop and cell phone. They grew all their own food. They might have tried a bit of pot back in the day, but don't use any drugs now.

They eventually built a bigger house, a whopping 400 square feet, using wood that they cut on their own land. It is still off the grid, and solar powered.

There are actually quite a few people like that in that area.

You see here is your problem, "who call themselves such". Although hippies may now call themselves a hippie, for convenience sake, originally they were just who they were and others called them hippies. They never tried to be a "hippie" or follow a "hippie lifestyle" or do "hippie" things and still don't because those things were never the point. "Hippies" are kindred spirits who dance the dance of life and love and for for a brief moment they all danced together.

 

Were you born in the 40s or 50s?
if not then you are not a hippie.... why would you want to be a pretend hippie? is the psychedelic shit, is it the music, is it the drugs?

I would credit the hippie movement in the U.S for creating a cultural revolution in the American nation for the better.

America is a nation that is just two centuries old, with all the foolishness and ficklemindedness that comes with a young nation . Unfortunately along the short road they travelled, they obtained nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles without the wisdom to use it. It is like guns in the hands of children.

The american generals, and politicians were quite trigger-happy, ready to bomb any dissenting nation out of earth, a legacy of their cowboy past of the previous century. Mob justice and lynchings were also quite commonplace.

A counter-balance in the form of the hippie movement was needed to institute non-hypocritical peace and nonviolence in the land , and to ensure restraint and accountability in the American politicans and military who were quite gungho with the immence wealth and weapons in hand.

Otherwise there would have been a good chance that America would have ended up like the 'mythical' Atlantis upon which the Atlantic ocean nearby has been named, which as per legend destroyed itself by excess of materialism.

In fact, you can term it quite fortunate that people are still able to chat and discuss these stuff here . If a nuclear holocaust had happened then by the reactivity of some petty minded politician or general seeking drama for mere sensation, none would have been discussing this stuff in this forum.

IMO, you can be whatever you want to be. That includes a "hippie".

And honestly, it's just a word. A title, that I imagine the mainstream media implemented.

Beatnik, Hippie, Gypsy, Square, Jock, Nerd, King, Subject, Loser, Winner, White, Black, Gay, Straight, Christian, Atheist, Normal, Weird

Just words that only have as much meaning as you give them.


Be yourself, and fuck whatever stupid words people use to define you. If being yourself means you're a hippie, then you're a hippie. Simple as that.
But if you're a hippie just to fit in with people or whatever dumb reason you don't want to be your unique self, then you are selling yourself short of a much more fulfilling life.

 

So much goes into this or nothing at all, not sure yet but I consider myself a hippie and 90% of the people I meet consider me one so that works out pretty well haha.
To me a hippie starts with how you carry yourself on the inside ... loving, kind, warm, mellow, understanding.,open hands and an open heart, animals and plants are our friends haha love love love. Actions are important too from maybe causes or beliefs you stand up for to being your own farmer of sorts to being comfortable in your own skin. Folks refer to me as a hippie on the account of me being all the things I mentioned above and projecting it outward, really wanting it for other people, peace and love and then how ya look/dress? this usually helps other people identify you as such which is cool beans by me...language is probably part of it as well haha On the outside I myself am always being bare foot, jeans, sweaters and cardigans long hair/dreads ya got music maybe? Where ya live, where ya hang...So much or like I said maybe its nothing at all .
In the most simple definition if someone feels they are something then they probably are and that works too

 

Afghan coat and long hair is a hippie (and free love if you can get it), I had them both in the 70s.

I'm a filthy hippie with my obligatory headband, and mirror shades to hide my dilated pupils. I will eat your cat, and shit on top of your television set.
The Dirt under my fingernails transmits fungal spores onto everything that I touch.

I also enjoy the Grateful Dead, but I only listen to the second half of Terrapin Station, and that one live album.
