let us all remember that in reality dreadlocks don't belong to any one particular race, group or culture.
They are quite literally how human hair gets when left unkempt and uncared for and originated as a means of dealing with our hair rather than any type of fashion statement.
In that sense it is why dreadlocks always give that dirty, unkempt appearance, because that is exactly what they are, unkempt hair that has naturally matted.

Today it is a "fashion choice", but for most of history it was more a result of not having as many options for hair care and maintenance.

not sure how historically accurate this is, but this says Indians were enslaved and brought to the caribbean islands where they introduced dreadlocks into rastafari culture. Thats interesting

Dreadlocks have spiritual significance in some cultures which i guess is why some get pissy about white people doing it as a fashion statement

Entirely true of course, Nox. Although let me antfuck it: people should learn that, not remember it. We are oblivious to that at first. Most young people I know with dreads never knew it wasn't mainly a black thing before it became fashionable in a way ;) They get to know it sooner or later of course when confronted with a discussion like this. But most peeps with dreadlocks that I came across of DID have some affiliation with reggae or the rasta and/or hippie mindset. Not everyone though, esp. in the metalscene I also came across of some that didn't in any way.

As silly as it sounds the reason i started mine was because i felt like each dread was a vine itself. Each and everyone have there own meaning, They define different parts of my life. As they mature so does my view on each thing. As for the judgements since iv had them. I do get alot of how often do you wash or are you rasta questions and a few " white people shouldn't have them" comments but other then that it hasn't been to bad yet but then again you shouldn't ever care what someone else things about you.

When I see "libtards" that's the end of a rational conversation. Shows no respect for those that believe in a more equitable society for all. The history shows it and the present shows it. Is Sanders then--a "libtard? That right wing horseshit get tedious. Hair---who gives a shit.

I’m sure there were plenty of white guys back in the 60s and 70s that had afros, like Painter Bob Ross.

As a matter of fact I couldn’t picture Bob Ross without a Fro

Really, because the local pack is still swinging their newspaper in front of Trader Joe's.
    And this is Oakland.
But, hey, the main dude answers his phone "power to the People." Even when it is his wife.
He's actually charming. We got into a longish discussion about post revolutionary life. He's intelligent, articulate, speaks clearly with a side of liberation language.
He has no plans, as he expects to die in the fight.
Sigh. What a waste of brains and passion.

Unfortunately sacrifices have to be made.

When the great race war begins many of our best will fall but those who survive will become the foundation of a new order.

If we achieve victory over our oppressors we will create a world where all men will be welcome including those whom we defeated.

Your best answers would come from asking alot of non-whites.

I don't think there are alot of non-whites in this thread.

well, it definitely wasn't "eons" ago. slavery only just ended 150 years ago - two lifetimes ago, you could purchase a human in the USA. and after slavery was abolished, things haven't exactly been peachy for black people in this country. so you might say that the mistreatment in the recent past has contributed to inequalities in the present. but i agree, we should try to look toward the future and get rid of all that nasty shit from the past.

we have to lay somewhere in between the two extremes of "omg my great grandpa was a slave and now my life is ruined!" and "slavery was like....1000 years ago, can't we just forget about it?"

No, I think guilty white liberals should keep talking about it, and how much they love black people. Really be sure to let everyone know that you're "open-minded" and not some bigot.

^my mom was in high school in the south when schools were desegregated.

Now my mom is a great example of how america moves away from racism

But think about the majority of the students she went to school with whose families benefitted and strongly believed in american apartheid. And these people grew up a few short years later and had children who grew up going to school with black people but still heard antiquitated racist views at home.

Not to mention black people who grew up in the Jim Crowe era where blacks lived on the underbelly of white society and, in the eyes of white people, their only role in society wss to work and occassionally do a funny song and dance for the white people on occassion - so some of that mentality was passed on to the children and grandchildren of jim crowe era blacks.

Hundreds of years of slavery and severe racial inequality doesnt just go away in one generation, because each generation learns the values of the generation before it.

And i'm not sure what not talking about it will accomplish.

Im sure some people in this thread read my posts with disgust because they see me as a bleeding heart liberal or a social justice crusader or some othrr inane meaningless insult, but i didnt really think about race relations at all until a couple of years ago, and not because of the ridiculous inflammatory media coverage but because i just started listening to what blacks were saying about the issue. Morgan Freeman nonwithstanding, it seems to me that a lot of blacks are interested in talking about the issue and a lot of white people arent really listening to them.

I don't think anyone is talking about ignoring it, but clearly the issue of race is used for political reasons by people who want to do nothing more than stir up shit and create division instead of unity. Let's face it, the issue of race as it currently stands is being used for political purposes which do not have the best interests of black people (or anyone for that matter) at heart. I am quite frankly sick of all the media's race baiting as well as the guilty white person mentality that feeds into it.

and you perfectly illustrate part of the problem, you automatically related my remarks to blacks and slavery in America, yet my comment was purposely worded to be all encompassing.
Not to diminish the attitudes/feelings that still prevail that have their genesis in the most historically recent and legal significant slave economy, but in reality go far enough back in anyone's family tree and you will find similar treatment.
How many centuries are we supposed to lament and foment over past atrocity's?

Ok, so it's only been about 150 years since the most historically recent and legal significant slave economy, but continuing to focus on it in the manner currently in vogue only serves to increase the divide and further resentment, mistrust and animosity.

ps. in case you weren't aware, slavery hasn't ended, it is still a thriving economy in many areas of the world, and often sanctioned and ignored by those in power, yet people still wanna whine because great-grand pappy picked cotton 200 years ago???

Yeah i agree - like i said in my post, the media is incredibly inflammatory and they've really manipulated several racially fueled incidents in the last few years.
