Just could not help it after seeing this BSA statue in DC.

BTW, I was an unofficial Assistant Scoutmaster in 1967 (couldn't be official since I had no religion - they still discriminate against non-religious).

On a camporee at Gettysburg the boys put on a shadow show in their tent and insisted we see it. With a flashlight shadow one boy was on his knees, the other standing with a hotdog in an inappropriate place - the kneeling boy put his mouth on the hot dog and bit it off!.
    grin emoticon

Actually, it was kinda funny but we had to officially stop the show and chastise these creative, mischievous boys. Kids do not need adults to currupt them.

I saw this Stop sign from a bus in Barcelona, Spain and wondered why the English version of this international sign, instead of Pare or Alto.

In July I noticed the same English Stop signs in Milano, Italy. Has "STOP" become an international word?

    Hello,

here in Alemanistan we have the word 'Stopp', but the word on the sign is 'Stop' (If I remember correctly.). I think the reason for this lays in the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals in the late sixties, where road signs had been standardised. Before that we had a 'Halt' sign.

    Regards
    Gyro

Stop has always been a dutch word as well. But not an italian word I think. Yeps, it is has probably become the international word in traffic and traffic signs since the sixties as Gyro said!

I remember the standardization of road signs back in the '60s but each country had their own words. In Mexico I saw red octagonal "ALTO" signs and in Turkey they said "DUR."

This year was the first time I saw "STOP" as the word on these signs in two European countries.

I am definitely glad it got standardized in an international language in Europe before I started roadtripping through it (esp. eastern Europe) :D
