The Nazis flew a flag with the Buddhist and Hindu swastika, and morons turned that into a symbol of hate and genocide. The symbol did not do anything it was people who gave it a different meaning, just like the idiots today with the confederate flag. Why did the Confederate Constitution ban overseas slave trade, and permitted Confederate states to abolish slavery within their borders if they wanted to do so? In 1864, why did the Confederate States begin to abandon slavery? Why wasn't slavery abolished by the Union (North) until 1868, 3 years after the war? Why did Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware still had slaves after? We both know the truth, the North wanted that rich fertile soil that the South had so badly, and the South did not want to return to a tax-burdened British imperial rule, under a draconian system that the colonists fled from. Lets face the truth, the civil war was the Revolutionary War part two.
Then again, you have espoused supremacist values on this very site, so not surprising you would start a thread like this.
I have relatives all over the US. A cousin of my was born in Peru, although she really grew up in Texas lol Anyway, the civil war is something I will never understand, not really...the harm and damage it did. Irrevocable damage all 'round. Yet, we persisted. and the south "lost" yet, I assure you I'm glad we are all one United area, ya' know? but slavery is wrong on all levels, no matter what. I know many African American/black people and consider myself to be friends with more than one! lol Slavery in the south, knowing what so many friends of mine ancestors went through...well, it just always humbles me. Even though, I don't know of any of my own relatives owning slaves, they had families of 12 and 13 so, I don't think they could do mmuch more than feed themselves. on subject: A momument is one thing..we should not deny facts, no matter how bad (or good). Keeping that damn flag hanging is another thing altogether. They need to take it down and put it somewhere special...they can all argue about where to put it.
Nope. We are proud of our ancestors, who fought for this country in an effort to preserve the balance of control that a tyrannical dictator was trying to hijack. Yes the Confederacy failed, but this system will fail too. All great empires must end eventually.
BS the south just didn't want to give up their ill gotten wealth. Whatever, the south lost, take down the fucking flags. Display of the confederate flag borders on insurrection.
Oh I see--you cling to your distorted perception of the past, and are so butt-hurt over a flag, an inanimate object that has never done anything to hurt you. I'm sorry you're mad bro, I'd give you a doughnut to sit on if I had one.
What dictator would that be? The importation of salves from foreign nations was already banned in the U.S. by 1808. Here is the Confederate version: Article I Section 9(1) “The importation of negroes of the African race from any foreign country, other than the slaveholding States or Territories of the United States of America, is hereby forbidden; and Congress is required to pass such laws as shall effectually prevent the same.” This Article was inserted by conservatives who wanted to limit slave trading so as to prevent the states of Maryland, Virginia, and Kentucky from flooding the South with their cheap slaves. This was intended to be an incentive to get them to join the South, so that they could sell their slaves and make money. Once it was realized that this would also prevent African slave trade a bill was introduced to allow African slave trade...but it was vetoed by President Jefferson Davis, much to the dismay of the South. Here are the Articles that support slavery: Article I Section 9(4) “No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.” Article IV Section 2(1) “The citizens of each State shall be entitled to all the privileges and immunities of citizens in the several States; and shall have the right of transit and sojourn in any State of this Confederacy, with their slaves and other property; and the right of property in said slaves shall not be thereby impaired.” Article IV Section 3(3) “The Confederate States may acquire new territory; and Congress shall have power to legislate and provide governments for the inhabitants of all territory belonging to the Confederate States, lying without the limits of the several states; and may permit them, at such times, and in such manner as it may by law provide, to form states to be admitted into the Confederacy. In all such territory, the institution of negro slavery as it now exists in the Confederate States, shall be recognized and protected by Congress, and by the territorial government: and the inhabitants of the several Confederate States and Territories, shall have the right to take to such territory any slaves lawfully held by them in any of the states or territories of the Confederate states.”
Isn't that a bit of a stretch saying That Lincoln wanted to return to British Imperial Rule? Is that what you are saying, naturebear? I suggest anyone interested in Lincoln read A TEAM OF RIVALS, by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Excellent read and a lesson in compromise during a very rough period in our history. We were, as a country, guilty of using human machinery to enable some to live a life of extreme wealth and privilege. The flag and variations were used as symbols of the planter culture and as such, continues to remind the ancestors of the former human machinery of that period of time in which dehumanization by all the methods known and discussed were used. And of all the "troubles" afterward, including lynchings, segregation, poor schools, exclusion from businesses, relegation to ghettos, (which have become vast in scope to this day.) So, I can see why black folks can get a little het up when the symbol of that period of time still flies proudly here ,there and everywhere. I mean--what are black folks supposed to think when confronted with the symbol in question? Pride in ones heritage is well and good, but I'm certainly not proud of my slave owning ancestors. I am proud that they braved covered wagon travel to arrive west, but that's about it. And believe me--they remained prejudiced until the days they died.
Oh my gorsh, you called me a carebear lol. No it's not a stretch at all. So why is this known plagiarist a credible source?
I know! I changed it tho. Silly me. Just read it and see what you think. Lincoln was an interesting person. The Lincoln-Douglas debates were very good.
The swastika used to mean something better too. It doesn't change that it was twisted to mean something else now. Same with the Confederate flag. If KKK members weren't flying it as a symbol of their cause people wouldn't be so angry about it, but they are.
Naturebear: The border states you mentioned had already had slaves at the time of the South's secession. There were elements in each of those states except Delaware, (which had a very small slave population), that wanted to join the South. Lincoln knew that the resources of those states were needed to win the war, if they left the Union the North was in trouble. In addition, if they left more of the North's army would be needed to control those states thus redirecting them from combat in the other Southern states. Lincoln was faced with the task of keeping them in the Union without giving ammunition to the secessionists. To do this he ignored the present policy of slavery in those states and worked to have them prohibit slavery on their on, states' rights if you will: You will have to post sources that site the fact that slavery was waning in the South during the war. What I found was: Slavery began to be abandoned in the South because it was found to be becoming unprofitable. It limited trade, depleted the soil, relied on one type of crop (mainly cotton) subject to disease and price drops, relied on slaves who had no interest in manufacturing or scientific farming, etc. In addition the Southern slaves emboldened by the war were rebelling and it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain control over them, draining off resources that could be directed against the North. What else do you want me to address?
I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if I'm repeating someone a very abbreviated history in the confederate flag - it was originally the battle flag of Northern Virginia. Fast forward to 1962, South Carolina decided to put it on their capitol dome in protest of the civil rights movement and this is where it really started to gain traction. So unless the flag is being used in direct reference to a battle fought by Northern Virginia calvary it is complete bullshit to deny the flag's racial connotation. I've never really given the flag much thought until this recent hysteria - the flag is something I see rednecks fly and only in the rural parts of SC. So its always been a source of embarrassment to me. When I drive through rural parts of the state I count the flags and have a good laugh over it and that's it. No one in SC cares about keeping the flag up except rednecks and maybe civil war reenactors. Its just a stupid part of our past and its time to let it go. just as a side note - another piece of southern mythology is that the war was fought over states rights. While this is technically true, the "right" in question was the right to own other human beings. Almost every secession document written mentions the white man's dominance over the negro as a direct cause of secession.
This. I know of some very proud PROPER skinheads who fight to try to retrieve the skinhead "look" from exactly the same kind of nationalistic thugs in the UK. meanings can be changed, symbols co-opted. it sucks but it happens, no use arguing what the original meaning was once that happens.
What is the deal? It is all symbolism.....and even though the Confederate flag was not fashioned to represent slavery originally, that is what most people automatically think of when the see it now....like it or not...and it is a symbolic gesture for Walmart or anyone else to remove it now in a symbolic gesture to show they care, whether they really do or not, is anyone's guess.....The swastica now makes most people think of one thing first also. it is just the way it is....
