I'm thankful for the tribal thing and that I have the skills to be a part. Don't think I'd make it in a commune. There was one a long time ago called the medical opera that always intrigued me. Don't know what ended them.
I remember 'back the day' a couple of communes set up locally they were nice in principal and theory, though quite difficult in practise - (don't forget young students - strong in ideology but (too) young in/of experience) they were ne'er to be in/of longevity. = SO SAD Nowadays however, there seems to be more of an awareness of youth and with the youth of yesterday the elders of today - and so a much better chance of successful survival - methinks
<< Nowadays however, there seems to be more of an awareness of youth and with the youth of yesterday the elders of today - and so a much better chance of successful survival - methinks>> Funny you should say that. We're about a fifty-fifty mix of 20-27's and 50-70's. We have exchange of vital things. We also count our loved ones as each others baggage ie, one's crazy hysterical mother or another's "cliven bundy" father is just "noise" that doesn't harm the bonds of our mutual well being. They may be there, but ultimately we have the strength to withstand their antics.
I'm extremely interested in this "tribal thing" you speak of, I love the native tribes and their ways.~ I have long desired to learn to be like them, but I do not know where to start.~ It seems when I try to find ways to learn the skills of true self-sufficiency, of living with nature and not in spite of it: it seems my options are limited to military (been there, got no natural skills I wanted from that, not doing that ever again, I'd rather die), and paying ridiculous amounts of "money" for a 12 week long "survival education".~ I'm at the point where if I don't find another way after 1 year with my family, I'm packing my backpack and heading out into the wilderness: if I live and if I don't, so be it!~ If I live through that, I want to eventually head to a hippie commune to see if I like it, if I don't like 1 in particular then I'll just head on to the next one and so on.~
Try learning about farms and then do the basic same thing in more harmony and time with nature. Everybody tries to force their strawberries in winter instead of just learning about strawberries while they watch the thermometer. They go out with a gun and some salt and think that makes them a mountain man instead of just another dope that didn't bother to read the world of books first. We wtch for what nature is doing/giving and follow/collect. But that's been my whole life. You need some experience that can be gained in smaller steps first. Go camping. Go canoeing for a weekend. Develop your ears and comfort out there first. You need to know what's hazardous too and how to avoid trampeling over other species that may bite back in fear and how to avoid being a meal. Forest manners as it were. Nature is real. Anymre, most people really are not and really only a pain and destruction. I'd learn quick-er too. Not much time for the "vacation holiday glory" of the worst species on the planet. Oh - these days you need a geiger counter too.
<< Except for the technology part, sounds like great advice!~ Thanks!~ ^_^>> Tonto has'em geiger counter and in a safer place. You go eating natural where you are without checking and you could easily poison yourself, especially out of the sea. There is more to be aware of now. We have been thrown into a tainted world. Every day we eat things that fight parasites, bacteria....radiation.
I prefer more natural primal ways of learning and experience, using a piece of machinery to substitute this sounds lazy to me and for me personally this is unacceptable.~ I reject your assumption of "a tainted world", this planet is different than it was 1,000's of years ago but it is by no means completely toxic.~ Back to the subject of this thread, please.~
I apologize. Your whole coast is being bathed in highly poisonous radionuclides and is being monitored by gov and private "hippie brained" people. I just don't know a natural way to knoe how much rdiation one may be eating is all. Cheers! And bst wishes in your endeavor ~
what happened ? !- the same thing that's happening here...the Babel got too strong and we forgot that most of us are on the same page. Instead we speak in word games that we use to fool ourselves, to spare ourselves from Knowing that we are not being the Being we Know we Are. Few are really willing to Do what is necessary to make community happen - it's one hell of a lot of work and those who Know - know that it seldom continues longer than the weakest link holds the chain together. Eventually some come to See that instead of looking for and waiting for....one must live it. In the becoming of the Being, all becomes lessons - the mistakes redeemed by learning from them. So indeed it comes to rest with Self. are you willing to be True to You ?... and if not....well.... ?
The Oakland Morehouse was established July 14, 1968, and is still going strong. If you are curious, every month there is a wine & cheese party, the next one is at the Oakland Morehouse this Friday, 9 January. Friday, January 9, 2015 8:00 PM Oakland Morehouse 80 Hamilton Place Oakland, CA 94612 Meetup.com - Morehouse Community Events.
Please allow me to tell you a little something about the community that I was a member of for 15 years.... We believed in practicing tolerance.... Yonder was the type who wanted us to give him money, but not bother him with our projects, or involve him in disputes... Unfortunately, he had a habit of stirring up trouble, telling stories on people... Different stories to different people.... Eventually, he threw out everybody that had anything worth stealing... Little surprise that he was thrown out of town shortly there after. Sadly, there is little recourse for someone who has invested years of their life and all of their assets in a community.... I tried to get a discussion every where... And yonder sent threats and got all of my pleas for help taken off line... Find people who can be trusted, and pay attention to red flags... Good luck in finding community.
It's all great if you've brought a copy or two from the Foxfire series, far better if you've actually read any of it and extra helpings of sprinkles and stars if you have ever actually done a damn thing in them.
right on! too many bull slingers and dreamers than doers! this is why I don't want to se anyone on my land but wife and -once every other year- one of the grown children.
There is another Wine & Cheese party at the Oakland Morehouse, Friday April 10th. 47 years, and still going strong. Morehouse Community Events
Well Fritz, I do appreciate being quoted (message posted 2 years ago minus 1 day--and we're still alive!) but you were in the thick of that conflict related in the "84 acre commune" thread. As I said, we can't be sure who was right or wrong there, but it's an illustration of how things can go bad and how people who should have been friends may end up blaming each other. Maybe you have some wisdom to offer on the topic of how a group can form and keep a place going both economically (supplying its needs as time goes by) and socially, keeping people happy to be together? Of course you have to start with terra preta do índio, you've made that very clear, but how does the magic keep going after that?
Well, no *need* to start with Terra Preta, but if all you have is Terra Cotta tainted with some fresh Horse shit it's probably a good place to begin. And those suggestions were in that thread as well and others made. But those are the foundational, ifrastructural things that simply make day to day life easier. Hot water on tap, *flushing* toilets, electricity. Beyond those would be for the bulk of those involved in such an endeavor to want it, to have foreknowledge of the things they'll be doing or at least be given proper instruction on how to do those things and willing to listen, not a random assortment of individuals thrown together by mostly chance with little exception, not "found by the riverside homeless and 1/2 crazy" or "Hitchhiking Teenage Girls out of options" I'm not saying helping out folk like that is a bad idea, but if you make up the bulk of your crew with people who dont know a Hoe from a Hammer in the first place, your hopes for sucsess should not be very high (Unless you have a big bankroll to back the groups "Learning eperience".) I mean "you might get lucky" with a crew like that, but then you might have better chances in Las Vegas betting 00 on the roulette table.
