To all you Pacific people, on the west coast of the US, does the damn thing ever get warm? I put one finger in the Pacific at La Jolla, and that was enough for me.
Only north of Cape Hatteras, NC. That's where the Atlantic currents from Canada and Cuba meet. Spectacular place, if you've never been there. Violent water.
i haven't really had a lot to do with oceans, nor with swimming. my dad used to like the beaches along the coast as places for camping. but like i said in the road trip thread, i'm more into my forests and mountains.
The current water temp just off the coast is 37 F but it will warm up to a whopping 60-65 F by August Hotwater
Pacific Atlantic Mediterranean I suck with geography...the Atlantic is off the coast of Scotland and England, correct?
atlantic. and several other bodies of water that aren't oceans, but have been named in this thread anyway. you've swam in bbab's tears?
SC and further south, the water will be warmer than that by the end of May, and into the low 80's by midsummer. Florida Bay is very nice. I guess it's technically an arm of the Gulf of Mexico, open to the Gulf on the west side, and separated from the Atlantic by the Florida Keys. Not only is it calm and clear and warm, but also very shallow in most places. You can wade out a long way from shore. It's a magical place to be on a warm night, with somebody special.
Since people seem to be confused.. Historically, there are four named oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic. However, most countries - including the United States - now recognize the Southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean. The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian are known as the three major oceans.
It's all word games. Divide them up however you want. All of them are interconnected into one giant ocean. On the other hand, the North Atlantic and South Atlantic are so different that they have opposite seasons.
Speaking of history........ 300 million years ago there was only one ocean, the so-called super ocean Panthalassa Hotwater
Every time I've been in the Pacific ocean it has been ice cold or nearly ice cold. I can see why people are distinguishing certain bodies of water from the four oceans...the gulf of mexico seems particularly different than the Atlantic in my opinion and if I'd swam in one of the great lakes I'd think it worth mentioning in this thread, so lighten up people.
Sea of Cortez. Got caught in a big undertow once, flipped around and turned upside down. I saw the Sun and swam up towards it. Still coughing up sand 35 years later, lol.
