As a highly tolerant and socially liberal atheist, I feel torn on the whole ISIS issue.

it's becoming more and more difficult for me to see Islam as the religion of peace. I'm not scared of ISIS at all but I don't feel compelled to respect their beliefs.

Break it down a little bit and you'll see that ISIS go way beyond anything Islam has done in past times.

The Muslims conquered Persia shortly after the death of Muhammed, and ruled it for centuries. During that time, archaeological digs were allowed, and cultural artefacts from previous civilizations were left in tact. That was also true in modern times under Saddam

Same is true regarding religious tolerance. Christians and other groups had been in Syria since the early days of Christianity.

Personally, I don't like Islam and I don't buy into the 'religion of peace' narrative, but ISIS don't really represent the majority of Muslims.

Uhm, what's there to respect? You don't have to be afraid you are less tolerant or socially liberal if you don't, because they and their 'beliefs' (and more importantly how they act upon it) are not the same as those of Islam and most of it's followers. Normal muslims despise ISIS and their 'beliefs' and actions as well.
