At a festival I saw a rack of tie-dyed and dip-dyed lingerie, and they were so pretty. I asked the lady if she made them herself, and she said that she did and that they had to be pretreated first, unlike just tie-dying a regular t-shirt. Does anyone know anything about this, or has ever done it before? I really want to make some!
I've tir-dyed a cotton slip, does that count? I wear it as a dress, though... picture: I think silk would be able to be dyed, but I would def. soak it in soda ash first. I even soak my cotton stuff in soda ash. Good luck!!
If the lingerie that you want to dye are made of natural fibers, then there shouldn't be a problem. Of course you need to soak them in soda ash beforehand, just as you would with anything for dyeing. I'm not aware of anything else that you could pre-treat them with. Just be sure that your items are cotton or mostly natural fibers and you should be ok. Synthetic cloth really doesn't hold the dye, even with soda ash. Personally, I have a stack of tie-dyed boxer-briefs that I love to wear. There's just something about sporting tie-dyed undies that makes me smile.
Thank you SO much for knowing the difference betwen dip and tie dyeing techniques! As for doing your own, I alsost hate to say this but that RIT crap is designed to work on synthetics, I believe. If your lingerie is natural fiber: silk, cotton, linen, rayon, hemp, the tried and true Procion is the only thing to use. Her pretreating line confused me. We soak EVERYTHING from bandanas to 20x15 foot stage pieces. but maybe she adds soda ash to her dye (a bad idea if you don't use it up in that day as the dye breaks down.). thin fabrics are luscious to do intricate details on. www.angelfire.com/biz/TieDyePaul
Awesome tapestries...Haven't had much time for dyeing lately, but hopefully I'll get back into it soon. I'm starting to go through withdrawls... I never thought about it, but makes sense that RIT dyes synthetics...I used it once for tie-dyeing, and sorry to say that I'll never use it again. Gotta stick with the procion dyes. Definately have had the best results with those. Peace
