True...but it is not like you can say STOP I WANT TO GET OUT NOW!!!!!!!! Life is completely in the hands of a wing and a prayer...I am not too comfortable with that... i don't know why ships and boats don't scare me. You cannot ask a captain to let you out in the middle of an ocean, either..... but I just have a fear of flying...always did have that, though.
Every time I go up in a airplane I look at the ground and get vertigo but I think if we fall that's it it'll be a fast fall and quick death. Drowning though.. seems slow and frightening and cold. I don't even like to swim in the ocean. It's not a world meant for humans. Not saying the air was either but I think we've gotten pretty good with it. :d
When my brother was little he had a dream about crashing in a plane and saw it was Delta. ...so he never flew Delta, and nor did I, due to his association.
I'm suddenly reminded of that clip from the movie Airplane regarding economy class passengers Hotwater
I don't even like being close to the Atlantic Ocean at night. I always imagine a big wave out there, and I can't see it coming. The Atlantic can be so violent.
i'd choose amtrak, and actually get to see something. a much more interesting, to me anyway, side of everything, then you ever get to see from a car. from the air of course, other then the few minuets right after and before take off and landing, all you really get to see, is the top of the cloud deck below you and the bottom of the one above. that and some stupid movie if pay for the more expensive seats.
While I appreciate Amtrak, and use it if time permits, when time is a factor (like days of lost work) I start with Southwest for US flights. I'll book multi carrier to save money, if it's only one change. After that, it's not worth it to me. I'll fly Spirit if I have to. (The less expensive way to Jmaica, for example...but God it seems like a long flight) This works because I fly one bag, under seat, only. I don't check personal luggage. I've checked business supplies and paints. If I'm flying with an instrument, im so tempted to buy a child's ticket for it. Too many friends have horror stories, especially with United.
But JetBlue isn't nearly as good as it was even recently. They are reducing legroom and charging for baggage now.
Love travelling by train....did Euro rail all over Europe...... United sucks nowadays? Glad Icame away from flying with them unscarred then.
In many places, a big problem with Amtrak is inadequate stations. No long term parking close by, no rental cars, inconvenient access to mass transit, unsafe walking conditions after dark. Even if the train has a baggage car, the station may not be willing/able to handle checked baggage. Before buying a ticket, you really need to carefully investigate what the station on the other end is like. Even a larger US city may have a train station that doesn't meet the minimum standards for a small town airport, in some cases. Where I live, train service to Washington DC is not bad. To anywhere else, it sucks. Long distance trains are scheduled to roll through here in the middle of the night, because this state ranks so low in importance. Yeah, so low that we have the largest of all USAirways hubs.
the big problem with america is a whole culture that has its priorities bassackwards. after world war two, europe and asia kept their public transportation and continued expanding and improving it, right up through the 1980s and even into the 90s. its only since 2000 they've (europe) started imitating our mistake and cutting back on it. (and fucking their economy by doing so) america makes the excuse that we're too spread out, but what that's really about is greed forcing people to indenture themselves and pretend that makes them free. and of course you know, its all about being entertained and not thinking about anything.
Despite Amtrak's inadequacies, it's better than a 2am Greyhound arrival in West Armpit, Oklakota. And again, no checked bags. There are two kinds of luggage, carry on and lost.
Too bad you're stuck on a web site with such terrible people. We'll never let you leave. The worst bus stations of all are the ones that have been combined with city bus transfer points. For a white person, that almost guarantees a bad experience with an aggressive local person. A few US cities have put some good plans together. New York, Boston, and Washington have subway stations inside their Amtrak stations, and Atlanta has subway (MARTA) service inside their airport.
No, the worst bus stops are at some convenience store/gas station/scary motel in someplace without local bus service. Although, the bus station in Denver is pretty interesting at 3 am.
I'd say. A one block radius area around the downtown Raleigh, NC bus station is constantly loaded with meth heads and criminals, even in the middle of the afternoon. What I really want to do is go back in time and fly Eastern Airlines during their glory days. They treated everybody like royalty. The only downside was that almost every flight involved a connection through Atlanta.
