I once had a crazy Muslim convert telling me that at the end of the world the sun will rise in the west, and that 'Muslim scientists' have shown that this can happen.

It surprised me that someone who had a western background could convince themself to believe this kind of BS. But I suppose there's no end to human credulity.

 

Really Bill? Some of the most ludicrous theories and imaginations come from people with western backgrounds I have the feeling you don't mean it like this but stupidity and ignorance is in no way a privilege of people in the middle east or muslims.... Same the other way around, as have been pointed out already: astronomers in the area around iran and iraq have been writing things down when the people in our area of the world had yet to invent or adopt an alphabet. Now, this should not become a pitiful contest or competition of any kind (me thinks) but I really hate it when the people and their ancestors in the middle east get portrayed as intellectual inferior or something (just to suit their own argument of course). To be sure, I don't think you project that on them.

We are all human beings on this planet, individuals who deserve a peaceful earth but some of us choose to be exploited, brain washed tools by our governments to go and kill other human beings. Murder is just wrong cupcake.

 

Self defence is not murder.

 

And the failure to defend yourself is death.

I agree totally that many people with western backgrounds have silly or wacky ideas. And I didn't mean it that way as you perceived.

There are many Muslim scientists and doctors, and some are at the head of their fields. The middle east has made many contributions to global culture. I'm not trying to say that good things only come from the west.

What I was getting at was more to do with the attitude some religious converts assume. Where people will say they believe things which must go against their actual intelligence.

anyway. The middle east has so many extraordinary cultural achievements to offer the world. Its too bad so many within and outside are trying to destroy that and take them back to the middle ages.
