I'm not a big fan of covers at all. Artists should concentrate on their own music, not somebody else's. What annoys me further is when pub bands can only play covers. The thought that anyone would learn an instrument just to play cover songs is absurd to me. Where have their imaginations gone? Surely your own project would be more interesting even if you can't form a band, write something solo. I don't know. Probably just me.

Lead Belly is dead, should his songs also die or is it better that they cover Goodnight Irene and Midnight Special? Did the many versions of Johnny B. Goode degrade Chuck Berry? Or did the various cover versions move the song from the category of "nice tune" into "classic that will never be forgotten." Is the musical world richer or poorer for Janise Joplin covering Gershwin? Did Johnny Cash's Hurt make things better or worse for the musical world. I may not like Tina Turner's cover of Proud Mary, but many think she improved the song. I guess the question goes to "what is music". Is it composition and self-expression, where the target is for the musician to express them selves by writing. Or is musicianship the expression of performance ability? "See what I can do with this song" (cf. Hank Darling's, Junior Brown's and Chet Atkin's versions of Sugarfoot Rag)
