Plenty of places in the world people are lining up and scrambling for rice, basic food, or trekking miles daily for fresh water, the only real reason being we, you, I, everyone else in the first world has the monopoly on resources. Its sick to "see" stuff like this over flat screen TVs, but for the most part we dont 'see' those in the third world lining up for rice. We just as sick and disappointing for not giving a shit. Imagine some living in the third world have to line up for two hours for bread hearing you say stuff like that, then later go online to order your groceries delivered, including bread
i could be wrong, but i think that the fast food places get away with not paying extra because they are considered small businesses based on the number of employees. even if it's a company that owns 100 stores, i think each store is considered its own business for those purposes. personally i'm kind of torn on this subject. on the one hand, i'm all for not fucking employees over. but on the other hand, holidays seem so arbitrary and pointless to me that it seems silly paying someone extra for doing the same job on one day as opposed to another day.
Thank you for your reality check Noxious Gas. Dec 31 after 6PM or Jan 1 before 10AM are also excellent times if the store you want to shop in is open. In the electronic/tv/computer shops it's a good time to haggle with the salesperson; they have been known to break down and cut a price just so they can sit down and have a couple aspirin and a coffee.
It is what it is but I find that a happy work force does a much better job and is much more profitable than a work force who feels separated from management. I had a young man call me on Tuesday night and try to explain that there was a misunderstanding in his family and he thought they would be celebrating on Thanksgiving but most of his family were actually gathering on Wednesday. He was worried about missing the family gathering. I told him to not worry about it. He could have both days off (we weren't working Thursday anyway) and to not worry about it. And you know what? I'll probably pay him for both of the days he had off and that alone will cost me more than the difference between straight time and time-and-a-half of those fast food workers at a single restaurant who had to work on Thanksgiving for normal pay. That is fucked up. There is no excuse for that. The only reason is that they care more about profit than people. I consider it an investment because we are going to have some tough days and that guy will come through for me and give me his best because he feels like I care about him and his family and I do.
