Well, I'm going to give moons recipe a trial run... I got the ingredients yesterday. How long do the potatoes have to boil usually until they get soft?? I'm also going to be making my own pumpkin pie!

Nope, I never learned to make mashed potatoes. My mom used to use the flakes. I know how to make spaghetti, grilled cheese, french toast (this is my specialty).. and that would be the extent of my cooking. I make a mean fruit salad though.

Wow, so you are going to try the garlic mashed potatoes....? Wonderful...Potatoes take about 20 minutes to get soft, if you quarter them....longer if you leave them whole....Just use a fork to fork them every so often to see if fork finds them soft all the way through.....and depending on high high your heat is....start testing them with the fork after about 15 minutes.....
I forgot to mention one of my favorites on my menu yesterday...whole Cranberry sauce. I buy ocean Spray.....the whole berries.....some people like the jelly one by them, but I like the whole berries in it.....
Some people make their own, too, but I don't go that far with cranberry sauce....

    good luck and have fun!

One of my favorite holidays. We used to have large crowds of twenty or twenty five.

After the main meal the guys would break out into a board game of Risk, or Speed Circuit.

If the women wanted to participate the Pit game would come out. I highly recommend this game to bring any family together, just make sure the guns and knives are well hidden.
The game was invented by Edger Cayce (the psychic) in 1904, seven can play and it has no turns, everyone plays at once.
When we play it usually ends up with screaming and shouting, bent cards, upset chairs, and numerous accusations of cheating.

    Great fun!

everyone that likes chicken also likes turkey. people have chicken for thanksgiving if they have a smaller family and 90% of a turkey would go to waste.

My family is dysfunctional and makes the damn turkey anyways.
Then I get to get drunk and sit at the table and snarl "TURKEY'S DRY" followed by a burp while my mother cries softly into her hands.

Or buy just a turkey breast and listen to people who didn't have to cook complain about not liking white meat.

Mom used to by a whole turkey and a turkey breast some years.

OK, it was a bit of humor. Some of us have more dramatic families than others.

We don't learn how to cook mashed potatoes in U.S. schools. We learn reading, writing, and arithmetic.
