Since you have become a vegetarian, what is the most embarassing thing you have craved? Recently I found myself craving something that I was completely ashamed to admit. I was craving saugage gravy and biscuits.

See, I might need to explain why this is a really embarassing craving for me. Aside from the simple fact that it is like begging for a heart attack. I am from Connecticut. My whole family is from the North East and sausage gravy is not anything which would ever be served in our house. Sure, I moved down to Florida as a young kid. But that didn't change any of the food served at home. What happened is that I was a big person for camping out and rangers (which is a fundy Christian form of scouting). And every morning when we camped out... sausage gravy. And when I got to college I learned how to smother biscuits with the gravy to completely make breakfast the least healthy meal of the day.

Yeah... it was really embarassing to admit that I enjoyed eating what looked like pig chunks swimming in congealed lard.

Anyway... recently (after over two years of being a vegetarian) I started craving this OF ALL DISHES. Thank goodness for vegweb because I was able to get online and find a way to make a vegetarian version. So it isn't like my craving was going to violate my decision to not eat meat... but still, that is probably the most embrarassing craving I have ever had.

Has anyone else ever craved something they were completely embarrassed to admit?

I'm lucky in that I've never really craved any meat products in all the time I've been veggie. Even bacon doesn't appeal to me. I wouldn't find it embarrassing if I did though. If anything, resisting cravings makes your dedication all the more impressive. Sometimes I feel like a cheat!

    oh geez no!!

who are you being embarrassed too?
Bacon smells great when it is cooking...I just don't want to eat dead pig however I will not deny the fact that it actually smells really good. I don't feel embarrassed at all by admitting that I at time find certain things smell real nice or that I remember their flavour and think...yum!! Whose got the right to tell me that is wrong? I don't eat it but even if I did I wouldn't be telling them that it was wrong, tis my choice and something that I can't tell people to do, only try to show by example.
Have you ever had someone try and trick you into eating meat though by disguising it or lying to you that it isn't involved in what you are about to consume? I have and I have to say that is far more unforgivable than admitting that you remember and crave something at times but don't follow up on it!

This made me giggle as sausage biscuits and gravy was my first real craving as a vegetarian and still is after 9 years of no meat. However, now I crave my "veggie" version of it with mushrooms instead of sausage. (Yes, I was raised in the South)

u wnt the clean answer or the dirty one? He he.

Clean answer: Pork loins, guts, gristle, etcetera made into a frank and served with biscuits. Tasty, yet gross and deathfood.

hey, you hip to Dr. Atomic comics? The Pipe and Dope book?

I gots 25 years vegan. woot!

A Wendy's triple and a frosty. I would never admit this verbally.

    Thank you for understanding.

oh, and doc, a southern biscuit is NOT a flat sweet in the US. We'd call those cookies.
a biscuit is white flour, fat and baking powder. a heavily textured dinner roll.
I make them with whole wheat pastry flour and a flour, margarine gravy (the thicker the nonmilk, the better.

Weird coincidence: I live in Florida, and I moved here from CT.

I'm not really embarrassed about any cravings I get, but I have been surprised about some of the ones I've had. For instance, I thought that steak would be hard to go without, but I've never wanted it once. Skinless, boneless chicken breasts, however, lol....

My worst craving...shamefully, I'll admit it was steak. I didn't eat it though, I just thought of the cow and how filthy the piece of meat actually probably was. The craving quickly left me.

I could do without the frosty, but I have to agree about the Wendy's triple. At least the fries are Vegan.

I still miss turkey cubes in gravy. Sounds stupid, but they're good. They were one of the only lunch foods I could digest in middle school, and I really liked them. They tasted good and they felt good on my teeth, for some reason.

I have been veg for about 9 months now maybe and for the first few months I was craving meat all the time. Someone here told me that it goes away in time and they were right. I don't ever crave meat anymore.

I've been veggie for about five months and in the beginning I didn't crave meat at all. Yuck. I couldn't help but think about the fact that I would be eating a carcass. Ok I'm grossing myself out now. But as some time went on, I began to remember the good tastes of certain meats like chicken wings or ham sandwiches. Anyway, I hate to admit this but over Christmas I did partake in turkey eating because my dad was around and being vegetarian is a major taboo with him, the almighty carnivore. Anyway, I can safely say that after that I haven't craved meat at all. It tasted good at the time, but later it didn't set too well. I guess another reason that I don't crave meat anymore is because I've been eating soy meat substitutes lately. They taste great. Veggie sausage, buffalo wings, burgers, I even found a chinese restaurant that has veggie General Taos chicken...well not chicken, you get the point. It tastes great and it's not dead animal! What could be better?
