The far north of Queensland was my favourite part...beautiful empty beaches and rainforest's buzzing with life. You need a 4 wheel drive to get to the most amazing bits though... If you're into the whole hippy thing, Nimbin in NSW is worth a visit too I guess, though it seemed to me like some kind of hippy theme park...
Queensland, I agree. I didn't make it too far north, but miles and miles of mostly unoccupied beach was pretty awesome. Nimbin didn't seem much like a hippie theme park when I was there about 5 years ago; rather it looked like it had taken a turn for the shadier, with an influx of harder drugs and someone even refused to sell me $20 worth of weed cause it wasn't a big enough purchase. Byron Bay though, that was a real hippie's paradise, although it is a pretty popular destination. I've also heard really good things about WA but never made it over there.
Moulamein over the Christmas and Easter periods. That's where they hold ConFest. See http://www.confest.org.au - it's a hippie's Mecca.
