I don't know. People randomly bump it to give the kid advice and I remind/inform them that the kid is long fucking gone. C/S, Rev J
to a reasonable adult, i think owner/operator would count, at least somewhat. although, don't you have to drug test to keep a CDL? that kind of pushes you toward societal conformity at least a bit anyway. to the teenagers that bump this thread occasionally, it wouldn't count at all, because as a truck driver you still have to do something besides smoke weed and listen to music, and when they say they don't want a 9 to 5 job, they really mean they don't want a job that involves more than smoking weed and listening to music. since OP's hissy fit, the thread is now about being occasionally bumped by those teenagers i just mentioned, people pointing out the errors in their logic, and them having hissy fits and leaving, or sometimes just leaving without the hissy fit.
You can always find a kitchen to work in. Kitchens are a great place to move up the ladder but only so far. Or work at a jiffy lube. I worked at both these places with people that didn't even get GED's. I was just working at those places while I finish COLLEGE. Because I do want a 9-5 so I can spend the nights and weekends with my family and have more money.
who said i was complaining? i just answered the question. i think hissy fits are what makes the internet great.
Hello, coming from a pretty similar age as you. I totally think you should do what feels best. But honestly if I've learned anything in this lifetime is that sometimes what society propagandizes in youth like ourselves can actually be reliable. I'd hate to kill your vibes because I totally support you in doing what feels right but really I'd set up a life with a steady income of some sort or more so, a solid plan. In 20 years from now you might think back and hate yourself because life didn't work out as you'd hoped it would. My best advice to you is: get an education that'll help you succeed, then go on your life changing road trip. The education is your insured back up plan. I totally get where you're coming from because I had the same dream and so did my ex. Wanna know why we broke up? He didn't want the insurance of an education and wanted to jump right into life with his band. Follow your dreams honey but be smart about it. By the way, I'm the same age as you, not some wizened and aged folk. Talk to me if you want to discuss more happy trails!

I did the same thing. Dropped out to get my GED and all that. I scored in the top 5% so that helped a little. If you need to get a job at any point a GED will do you just fine. However you'll need to be practiced in the art of charm and social grace. Thankfully, not to sound conceited or arrogant, I was lucky enough to have both a good brain and a good personality/social skills. In my personal experience, being socially fluent, outgoing, and charismatic are absolutely priceless skills that will come in handy soooo many times over. Making a good impression on people goes a long way. So, to recap: SOCIAL SKILLS ARE CRITICAL good luck
I like the kid. He has balls. Sucks you guys chased him off. I can't believe how many of you "hippies" are so entrenched in the system. To other 16 year olds that have brains and consciences, School is a TOTAL waste of time. Life is the best school. Don't waste the best years of yours jumping through hoops and exposing yourself to brainwashing bullshit in the name of receiving a worthless piece of paper. I've never once had to show my diploma or ged to get a job. People that think it's a requirement are totally brainwashed. Quit state sponsored school as soon as you can, find something you're really interested in, hopefully something that makes the world a better place, and study the shit out of it online. Find someone that is making a living doing the stuff you like to do and work for them for free if necessary until they want you as a partner or you learn the ropes for yourself. If you don't have any idea what you'd like to do, travel! Get a framepack and some basic supplies and hit the road. Check out wwoofing, ic.org, americorps, etc. The list of cool opportunities to learn and experience is really long. No reason to tie yourself down at some shit job just so you can barely make enough to get back to work the next day. It's an endless cycle of depression and disappointment. The merit reward system is inherently broken and fiat currencies are a scam to create slavery. It's way easier to learn how to thrive without money than to swallow your morals and fight to succeed in a corrupt system that's fixed against you. A decent busker can make $100 a day in the right area. If you live in a van or a tent, or a solar/pedal electric camper trike , you can live like a king on $10 a day. And the number one piece of advice I have.....Don't listen to old hippies that gave up on the ideals of the good ol days and are suckin' satans cock by participating in and enabling the unsustainable, destructive system that they fought so hard against back in the day. Do your thing. Fail. Learn. Try again. Repeat process until you have the life you want.
I understand not wanting a 9-5 job. I'm 25 and I don't want one either. I want to make money off of my art and support myself that way. But at 16, you should get a "9-5" job so that you can MAKE art and music. Until you are making money off of both or either, you need a job to support yourself. You could try making art commission flyers and distributing them to friends and family, and putting them up places.
great post! so what if the kid is gone... maybe he'll come back, or this can be of use to other kids. do what you fucking what, not what people think you should do. growing up i always tried to do what people told me they thought i "should" do, the "responsible" thing.... i'm so glad i stopped that and started living my way. even if i'm not rich or wealthy or well off, at least it's mine. i remember when i turned 18 in the foster system i had to sign a form acknowledging i was an adult and responsible for my own decisions; my social worker gave it to me and warned me, "now you're responsible for the consequences of your actions...." and i said, "i'd rather suffer or gain from my own decisions than the decisions of others." live your life. it's yours.
Haha. It's amazing how different that statement can look to different folks. A 16 year old can state it and feel a massive sense of excitement at the possibilities. Someone who has some years under their belt will look at that statement and just shake their head. Whoever this kid is, he seems set on learning the hard way. There is no finer teacher than harsh reality.
I agree, but I love learning, but the education system is flawed. It's all about getting that piece of papers, and kissing employers asses, and not actually learning. Is there seriously no one in this world other than me, who would actually consider going to school for something without actually getting a career in it? I mean, knowledge is power, and education should be more accessible for those who wish to further their knowledge, to make them smarter .. not just more employable!
