Yeah, know what you meant. Think it's important to put across that the government causing such carnage was NOT elected on a popular, majority vote, especially as some American readers seem determined to grab the wrong end of the stick and then hang on to it for dear life
To be fair, they stole the land from the original occupants, but only after you guys started the job for them.
I thought the weather was lovely and enjoyed the food. Also never met a single English communist... in fact most I met were considerably more conservative than myself; and by European standards I'm center-left.
I don't see the problem with making people who take benefits do some work in the community. They could help the elderly, tidy up the verges and hedgerows, repair potholes in the roads, they may even make themselves employable by learning new skills, if you really don't want to work, then don't claim benefits, simples.
Fine - if the work is there, why not PAY people the proper rate to do it, as a proper job ? You know - for a proper wage ? You might have noticed that we have a National Minimum Wage in the UK. Making people work for benefits = making people work for less than the NMW, and thus technically illeagal. And of course there's the little aspect of what happens when you can get work done by slave labour - you don't create new jobs, you just keep getting it done on the cheap, and ramp up the profits. In fact, your boss might just think that getting the work done on the cheap via slave labour is such a fine thing that he might get rid of YOU and save your wage. Of course, it will never happen to YOU. That's what they all think...
Very true. But I think the founding fathers of America thought the populace should have guns so they could rise up against any future tyranny that might come to replace the tyranny of the British or seek to overthrow the constitution. I was being a bit too rhetorical in my previous post maybe.
If they work for benefits then they would get the National minimum wage, if they didn't then the government would be breaking the law, so it benefits everyone really. The services would be run by the council, just like the old days, before privatisation turned everything on its head and created the Poll Tax and its baby the Council Tax....and brought in all these nasty companies with lots of brown envelopes to give to corrupt council officials...
Not only were Labour ahead until the coalition, but the Lib-Dems talked first to Labour about forming a coalition Govt. The Tories had to sit around being the losers for a few days, until the Lib-Lab thing turned out to be unworkable so we ended up (after something like ten days of discussions) with Con-Dem.
I think its about time you Brits started on the road to getting Maggie Thatcher canonized She pretty much saved your whole country
John Cleese is probably the funniest Brit ever, Rowan less so IMO. The 'who is the greatest brit?' question comes up over and again. I usually say Newton.
