I'm starting to write a book about my family's maritime heritage. Was wonder if anyone on here has been published and if so could they give some pointers ?
I've been published by a regional book of short stories a bookstore near me does. It actually is quite popular and most schools in the state of Georgia and some surrounding states have a copy (at least in elementary schools and middle schools). It's called O' Georgia, Too. I've been published in it 4 or 5 times... it's kind of cool.
My mum is getting her first book published soon. I haven't seen her for a few months so I don't really know how it's going, but I'm going home tomorrow for the holidays and if I find out something useful about it, I'll let you know.
get a copy of writer's market, even an older one, but do the research when you send queries. You want the correct editor's name! Try for something regional since you are talking maritime heritage. History and boat freaks might care, too, so that's a potential market. If there ar elots of religious types, that could open up religious publishing houses as potential publishers. Oh, and get a GOOD editing job before it goes out. you can look into a literary agent. there is also vanity press, where you pay to have the book printed, self publishing where you do it all from job printing to buying the ISBN number. drumminmama appears in An Honest Tune several newspapers self-published chapbook own site for archives
i would recommend self-publishing. you could wind up shopping your book for years if you try to search for a publisher, particularly if you're a first time author. metier books is one place to look.
I have had articles published in a magazine. What any potential publisher is looking for is NEWS! I mean there is no point writing what has already been written about.Doing research on the subject can quite time consumming and expensive. Also write succintctly.
I've been published a bit, local weeklies, High Times. The key is to not get discouraged if you get rejected a coupla times. keep plugging, keep wqriting, keep shopping your work around. Art is subjective, one person may think it is crap and another may find it brilliant. So don't let anything get you down if you really feel good about your body of work. I am not sure I totally agree with Bilby's assessment... you can pick up any magazine and see tons of articles of stuff that has already been written about by someone else. It's all about the presentation. Look for new ways to write about something, new angles, different perspectives. I do agree that news is where it is at, in the sense that it is interesting to people. But so is history, science, spirit, community, human interest... yadda yadda. Look at what kinds of stuff a particular publisher goes with, and target well. other than that keep it up...time is your best friend, that and patience. Good luck! Viv-
i;m writing a book, mostly for my own benifit so i;ll prolly just print it myself. but i just found out about this other interesting option www.lulu.com ,you send them your stuff, they keep it in a database and everytime someone order a copy they print it. its more expensive then ordering piles of books, but a better deal in the long run if your book doesn't sell.
michael, other folks that have been published, would you care to put up some links where we could see your stuff and buy it if its for sale?
I've never published a book, but I'm published pretty regularly in a few publications: TheNewStandard, Clamor Magazine, The Dollar Stretcher... I'm also a volunteer reporter and editor for my local IndyMedia. I have a couple of articles for sale on Constant Content, but am also always available for assignments. Can other people post links to their work? Would love to see it.
I have a relative that has been published numerous times both in publications and kids books. He did a bunch of art work too but he is dead now. I have several of his books and one with his autograph, was really fantastic too since it was made into a movie. My daughter has wrote tons of teenage type books but has yet the courage to submit it. You can try ebooks too, they are really cheap to make and send. I thought of doing the same for her but she has not given me the green light as of yet. Good luck to you!
i make a cut and paste zine, but have never been published other than that. if i ever finish the book i;m writing i;ll let y;all know.
Go to PublishAmerica.com, they do publishing and I used to know someone who did it. They said it worked out well
I have been thinking about doing a zine. Is it cheating if I format it in Quark...? btw, have I ever mentioned that I love your .sig?
quark...what is that? is it a program that lets you lay out the pages before printing? if so tell me where to find it... you can;t cheat making a zine, the options are as endless as your imagination. good to hear my work is appreciated!
well i just downloaded quarkXpress 5.0 from kazaa...free! also got adobe indesign, which looks like it is quite similar... though i can;t figure out how to use either of them, woe is me...
I got a couple poems that haven been published in some books. 1. know what you are getting are into 2. and all ways read the small print of a contract.
