My right knee is aching and sore -- but you need to be careful and not ice it too much, right? Or you might damage nerves, isn't that so? But ice is the only thing that feels good. Thank goodness I have the day off today at least! What do you do, that might not be obvious, to help with a sore muscle or joint? Advil, etc. never worked and just upset my stomach (I don't like those synthetic solutions any way). I think a combination of hot showers and 10 minute on/10 minute off icing, for an hour, is the best, with bed rest. What else do you do?
I was told twenty minutes of icing per hour by my physical therapist. Make sure you put a towel between the ice and the skin.
If it is a reoccurring thing you should probably have it checked out to make sure you are not doing unintentional unnecessary additional damage.
Ice is first for about two days (10 to 20 mins at a time...several times a day) and then heat is after the two days. Using them (cold or heat) at the wrong time can make things worse.
generally, i just stay off it for a while. which probably counts as obvious, but it's all i every really do.
both my knees were bothering me this winter and I said something to the lady giving me a massage thinking she could do something. She was looking at them when she stopped looking up and me and asked "do you chew your food?" Well kinda i guess, I answered. As it turns out your digestive system can affect your knees. I started chewing more and my knees stopped hurting after a week. Go figure
Pretty much BBAD. That's the way I was bought up too. No point whinging, get back on it, work the soreness out. Then I finished a degree in sports medicine.. Yeah, pretty stupid suggestion from the old folks. =p Don't worry about the Ice and nerve damage, keep icing. Ice for 15-20mins. You should also compress your knee with a bandage or if you can afford it go to pharmachemist and buy a heat warmth compression brace. It will keep your knee warm and compressed once you finish with the icing stage. Rest Ice Compression Elevation.
Great advice, I took a lot of classes relating to sports physiology on audit (non credit hour) while working toward my main studies. That is the best advice, along with seeking medical attention for serious injuries.
