Yeah.....I had to go 5 days a week, and it was pretty much a "go to church or gtfo" situation. I did notice the OP specifically said "church therapy." (I'll have to go back and check.) In my mind, that wasn't an regular organization. That was, "go to church or gtf to jail."
lolz. Yea... I mean I really don't know enough about the organization to say for sure what I think. I think it depends on how pushy it is and all that. But it is still an option. And without it it would be JUST jail, correct? So some people may still like it...
The policy that really targets sex workers is where do I stick it, the one affects sex workers in this situation is who is doing the sticking. Personal discretion is advised.
Back when I was required to go to church, I didn't mind all that much. The last one was a liberal United Methodist church. We had some wild times; a lot of fun that had nothing to do with religion. We had summer retreats at a camp way out in the fucking woods, and some kids would sneak out late at night and play "spin the bottle" for sex. I didn't participate in that. I wasn't ready yet. I was hesitant to mention SC because of you and Lynn, but... yeah. :leaving:
Talk about cruel and unusual punishment If given a choice at all, they should be given secular options as well. What about KY? We've got a fucking ark in the works. Partially taxpayer funded. And it probably won't even work in case of a flood. That's all I have to add, I'm disgusted.
This is just another example of how women are shamed for what men do also. I see no church therapy for pimps and tricks, only prosties. The spotlight is always on hookers. Just look at daytime talk shows. It's because they're women, bottom line.
I totally agree! This also makes me wonder what the "Christian Therapy" for gay and lesbian sex workers would even be. It sounds competely demoralizing and demeaning to punish those that are already victimized the most. You can say all the decent and moralistic things you want about Christian beliefs but in my experience they have also been the most fundamental reasonings for separatist hate of all those that do not fit their criteria. Show me a non-Caucasian female pope (yes I know that's just the Catholic church) and I might start believing that its more than just an old boys club ignorantly fronted as the guise for male insecurity.
Exactly, and this is the viewpoint of why I think a lot of us aren't adopting AT's perspective on this. And it's not just the state of AZ, it seems to be a trend in every bible belt type state that takes or allows man's law (politics) to be influenced by a faith (God's law). "Church therapy" also has a bad rap with science, and psychology, especially when it comes to "conversion therapies" for homosexual people, which science does not support, and only selective studies support the efficacy of the "christian therapy". As a Christian, I just want to say this makes me mad because I do not think leveraging the faith into people's lives is a good thing for the growth of the faith in fact I think it drives more people away and is contrary to how Jesus approached people to spread the word of god. --- @Samantha; I see what you are saying but if you read the rest of the article that the OP cited, it did talk about law enforcement going after the pimps as well (assuming male pimp here). I think it's just the nature of supply and demand, that creates more female based prostitution services being offered than something that men do, because certainly the opposite exists where men provide that service for women, it's just a smaller market. The article also isn't talking in the broader sense of which gender has certain levels of promiscuity compared to the opposite gender. --- Overall the premise is good, given that I think streetwalkers are in a different situation than higher class escorts are, the former more likely to be abused than the latter because they have less control.
The jelly, or the state? Sorry, couldn't resist. Every Southern state has done plenty of stupid shit, but it seems like AL, MS, and SC have always been the champions in drawing national attention for all the wrong reasons.
It's not "Church therapy." It's "diversion therapy." The role of the Church seems to be much smaller than you guys are thinking. This is a better article. https://asunews.asu.edu/20120426_social_work
From that article (post #33) "The victims received options for safe housing, crisis mental health counseling, medical services, options for detox and drug treatment, food, clothes and their initial interview for the Diversion Program provided by Catholic Charities, and most significantly, the opportunity to change their life" Based on that and the rest of the article- yea, they are Christian charities helping w the program but it is not a church program and much more the way I pictured it... And I stand by what I said even more that based on that information I do not see the problem with it.
This program is saying to treat them like victims as some of them are victims of sex trafficking and most of them probably have addiction issues or other issues. And it's a GOOD THING to treat those things like medical issues... not criminal. But pimps? Are you kidding me? Yea, let's go help them. Pimps already have money. (just one important example). I see it as they are looking at it from the standpoint of a lot of prostitutes are either victims of sex trafficking..and those who are not sometimes left home as teenagers and don't have anywhere to turn, deal w addiction, homelessness and controlling, violent pimps etc.- and instead of putting them in jail...give them a chance to live a different life if they want that path. Why would they wanna help the pimps? The pimps are not often victims. And I do NOT see it as they're saying "sex is bad...we want to change you because you're a female and you're promiscuous".... maybe some individual people are like that, but who the hell cares? if it helps someone great, if someone doesn't fall into the category of wanting or needing help, great too. As I said before I could be totally wrong and don't know totally enough info about the program but based on what I do know.... let's just say I know some people in real life who would have been happy with a program like that. I've met women in jail when I was there 2 summers ago with bruises on their faces from their pimp, completely strung out coming off of dope, on charges of drugs and prostitution and also...yea, having no where to go to when they leave jail...homeless and afraid of their pimp. But prolly gonna go right back to the same life and NOT happy about it. I know for a fact some of those women would have been interested. So anyone on here can say what they want ...doesn't really matter.
