While I agree with the last two posts, I don't think its entirely fair to compare Jerry to Jimi. Had Jimi been around longer, who knows where he would have gone. Nevertheless, when I listen to Jimi's live and studio stuff, I can't help but think that he may have been more "technically proficient" (maybe so, maybe not) than jerry. But to be honest, I don't think that Jerry cared about all that, and that was what made his style so anarchic and mind popping. Jerry's progressions were by far more stratospheric, intellectual, less egotistical, etc. and in my opinion, that made him a better player.
Talking about ego, I am suprized no one has mentioned Trey as the best or at a very minimum, on par with Jerry. I know he, phish, etc. are still a little trendy, but come on now. Sectarian disputes aside...you have to give respect to the Jedi!

hands down, and i speak from experience. . . . GLENN SCHWARTZ!!!! still alive and still pickin every thursday night at hoople's on the west side of cleveland. jimi had invited glenn to play at his birthday party a couple of weeks before he died. he was the founder of the band the James Gang (joe walsh was his replacement) moved on to cali to be in a band called Pacific Gas and Electric, got spun out on L and found Jesus and got roped into a cult in Kent ohio and played with The All Saved Freak Band. his parents forcibly intervened and he spent many years living in his van. his brother gene plays bass for robert lockwood jr. for the past 20 years. about a month ago me and my roomate(who's played drums for glenn for about 10 years) went to go see ray's music exchange and umphrey mcgee. we left after the first song of umphrey(as they suck) and headed to the west bank to see glenn. although the guitar players from umphrees mustve played 10,000 notes in that first song, glenn blew them out the town on his first note. he hates reporters and record companies( and women and beer and chemicals and just about everything but jesus) so good luck finding any recorded material (although some of it is amazing) its best just to make a trip to Hoople's some thursday and listen for yourself. just try not to be offended when he puts down his guitar and starts yelling at your woman, take it all in stride and enjoy

The next best? I would have to say that a guy named Billy Crawford is the next best, if not the best. Hes not famous, but i see him play every monday. He is the sickest guitarist ive ever seen. He covered red house and hey joe from hendrix, and to tell you the truth, i dont think hendrix could play it like he did. Simply fuckin amazing.

But other than that, i would have to say that Buckethead is the greatest guitarist alive (aside from billy). Ive seen him twice, and both shows are in my top three shows of all time. You just cant fade on buckethead. Its the combo of his insanly amazing skill, his great tone and tone control, and his fuckin wierdness that gets me. I mean, as far as speed and control goes, he is better then hendrix. He can do anything with a guitar. But the best part is, is that nobody knows what he looks like. Plus....he wears a fuckin chicken bucket on his head, can breakdance better then anybody ive ever seeen, and is bad ass with some nunchucks.

Are You stupid? With The Possible exception of Jimmy Page, Hendrix is the best. Clapton and Slash are superb as well

I cant believe I have to answer this question..pages and pages and no mention of the man who played everything that could be done on, to, or with a guitar, recorded it by 1960, and has his name on many of these previous guys guitars because he invented it.

    Les Paul

so wait...because i don't accept hendrix as a god and the unchallenged greatest guitarist of all time, better than everyone ever and everything ever, i'm stupid? let me get this straight...because i don't have the same tastes as you, because i don't get pissed off at someone the instant they deny that hendrix invented music and beat the nazis in WWII, i'm stupid? i think i've got it now...you can regurgitate the names of a few guitarists all your friends have told you are awesome, and i have different tastes, so obviously i'm stupid.

    thank you.

picking a number 2 guitarist is as opiniastic as picking a number 1, but for me the number 2 guartist would either be Steven Stills or Robin Trower

i agree hendrix is the best, but really you can't say who's the best because it's all opinion & like ever guitarist is different. there are alot of guitarist people said here but i'd have to say 2nd is jimmy page. i mean just listen to his soloing & all the things he did. he is great. & besides that they say he sold his soul to the devil to be able to play really good & be famous. i dunno if you can believe it or not but. they say a few other guitarist did it too. it's at the cross roads.

Stephen is a cool guy, I've met him. Haha, he seems kind of pushy sometimes as far as leading... always has been all the way back to Buffalo Springfield. :D Arthritis was getting him this year... he was doing a few solos and he kept shaking his hands violently when the solo ended... doing a lot of slide too, as Dylan did when arthritis started getting to him. Now Dylan is just doing steel guitar and piano.
