Welcome to the Opeth thread, thehipsterdufus...haha...:)

Hahaha...how can it not dawn on you that DT fans would like LTE? It's funny, because Mike originally wanted LTE to sorta just be his side project, keeping other DT members out of it. And after searching for a guitarist, it occured to him that he had the best choice right under his nose...JP...:) Actually, it was more along the lines of his ego wanting LTE to himself...haha. But JP is awesome, so there's no denying that he's perfect for the job...

Hmm...experimental metal? Well, since this is an Opeth thread now (haha)...I'll have to recommend Opeth to you. I don't know if you're into death metal at all (the vocals might scare you at first, I don't know)...but check 'em out...:) You might call 'em experimental in that they're not just cut and dry. Every song contains twists and turns that just keep you captivated. You might enjoy 'em...

(GG, I love punk... Its part of my soul, sorry. But I'm listening to metal again. Try some exploited, its like a cross breed)

Well, in response to the "Favorite Opeth Song" question, I'd have to split my decision between a few songs. It'd be a mix of: April Ethereal, Closure, The drapery Falls, Bleak, The Amen Corner, Leper Affinity, Under the weeping moon, and like 10 others I can't think of right now. I think a more fitting question would be which is my LEAST favorite, and to that I'd have to say Black Rose IMmortal. I haven't ever been able to get through the entire thing, it's just not up to par with other Opeth.

Yeah, JP is amazing, probably one of my fav guitarists. A while ago I was looking at the tab to "Paradigm Shift" and I pretty much shit my pants. I don't know if I can play it NOW, but if I could, it'd be after many months of practice. I'm working on "This dying soul" from DT's new album right now, but I'm still waiting for enough cash to buy a seven string so I can play it properly. Same with Dance of eternity, but I have more of that one down.

Haha, maybe this will turn into a guitar thread too....because when you talk about metal, you have to mention how hard some of it is to play...especially dream theater..

Good choices for your favorite Opeth songs. Hmm...yeah, I can't really choose one myself, but it'd probably be a mixture between Closure, Bleak, The Moor, Deliverance, The Leper Affinity...ah, so many...

Paradigm Shift...haha...good luck with that. JP amazes me. Sometimes I just sit there dumbfounded and wonder how any human being's hands could move that quickly...lol. How's This Dying Soul coming along? What can you and can't you play of it so far?

I wish I could play guitar, so I'm envious of those who can. I'm sure I could learn, and I've attempted to teach myself...but yeah. The closest thing to an instrument I can play is piano which I did for a few years. Hey, I guess I can take after Jordan Rudess (or Derek or Kevin...haha) instead...;)

Hey, if you like derek then try some PLanet-x if you havent already. www.xplanetx.com , or download some. They are an amazing heavy progressive rock jazz mixture. I saw Virgil Donati, the drummer for Planet-x at a clinic in Vancouver a while ago. Soooo amazing.

I'm working on just little things in DT songs right now, the first lead part (Not solo) in this dying soul is what I'm learning right now. It's the big buildup before the keyboard solo. That's all I've really tried out, since I need my seven string to play it, and I JUST started my new job, so.

Yeah, Derek's awesome. I've been meaning to listen to some Planet X for a while now...so thanks for the link. I heard they're really good. Plus, Derek's just a really awesome keyboardist. Do you have a favorite between Jordan, Derek, and Kevin?

Good luck on TDS. Yeah, you definitely need to get yourself a 7-string. It's good you started a new job...you can save up...:) How many/what kinds of guitars do you have?

Well... I've noticed you're into death metal and I like it even though I don't listen to it a lot!! But do you like HIM??? Because all the people I've met that are into stronger sounds never like them! I'm a big HIM fan but I'm a fan of music above all and I hate when people come around saying these horrible things about what they don't even haven't had the trouble to listen to!!! I think in the USA this band is known by HER!!! Please just answer! Even if you don't agree with me.

Right now I have 4 guitars. An Ibanez rg170 (My friend's) a couple knock-off guitars, and then Kramer focus 2000 that I haven't set up yet. I have a gibson sg tube amp from like the seventies that's like 120 watts, so it's pretty loud.

I'm hoping to get an Ibanez Rg 7 string, because one of my friends has one, and it's really nice. Hopefully it'll be some awesome colour like pink or neon yellow or something. But yeah, I'll have enough money in like 6 weeks, so I'll go crazy on the spending from there.

I really like derek sherinian for his polyrhythmic skills, but for pure talent, I'd probably have to go with Jordan Rudess. He's just really really awesome.

Oh, and to respond to that HIM question, I've heard HIM once, and it just sounded like 80's pop-punk techno with not too amazing singing. I don't really like all the effects and stuff like that. Maybe it was just the song I heard, although it WAS a single, as it had a video. Maybe I'll download some sometime.

Cool guitars...:) I always thought of how cool it must be to be a professional musician and to be able to have all the instruments you want. That must be like a dream-come-true, ya know? As long as you use them all, and don't just collect them for the hell of it, that is. Lol...just for a random fact, Guitar_god...do you know how JP got into playing guitar? His sister took lessons (I think with the flute...but I'm not sure), and because she had to practice, she was allowed to stay up late at night. John wanted to be able to stay up late too, so he decided to pick up guitar...hahaha. I just think that's really funny that we have this amazing guitarist today, and that's the reason he even started...lol...

Yeah, Jordan is very talented. I really like Derek though. I thought he really fit into the band so well, and I like his style a lot. Jordan is very good at what he does, but some of his lead sounds can get to be a little too much. Kevin was really talented too, and wrote good lyrics...but his personality kinda sucked as time went on. Even now, he's so off in his own world. DT tried to get him to play Space Dye Vest (since he wrote the song) with them for one or two shows, and he refused to. That's why we never get to hear SDV at any shows. DT doesn't want to play Kevin's song without him...and Kevin won't do it...argh...

Oh, and I listened to some Planet X...it's really awesome stuff, thanks for posting the link...:)

And, no...I don't think I've heard HIM, to be honest. Not sure that I want to...lol. Maybe one day I'll give 'em a listening to.

never heard of opeth, gonna have to check them out. I love a lot of the european metal bands, Darkain.. etc they put the old metal bands like slayer to shame with their musical talent.

not that i'll ever stop listening to slayer though.

Wow, I was just checking back through this thread, and I never even noticed that you put Darkane in there. I LOVE Darkane! My buddy got the Rusted Angel CD a little while ago, and it's amazing. A band that's similar to them that's also just amazing is SCARVE. Check them out if you haven't.

I actually dont like chick singers in bands very much. Or even chicks in bands for that matter. The only chick singer i really have any respect for is the one from The Donnas, its the only chick band thats really worth listening to. IMO. Her voice doesnt screech. *Sorry about the off topic-ness*.

I agree that now is a really good time to get back into metal. There are some really class metal bands around now, most of which have already been mentioned - including opeth. Another good death metal band to check out ( if u havent already done so of course) is Arch enemy. Angela Gossow kicks more ass than most male singers! In my opinion anyway lol. Dimmu Borgir and cradle of filth are good also, aswell as kittie.

    peace and love

I'm pretty much into the ol school type of metal. Metallica, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Pantera, and bands of that nature. Some new bands that I like are Shadows Fall and Mudvayne. I"m a big big fan of Zakk Wylde's BLack Label Society,
