I like the first sentence. Its a strong opening sentence. Its intriguing, it makes the readers ask questions.

I thought you spelled out too much information in the first paragraph, however. You explained too much and I think all that information would be better if it were slowly revealed throughout the book or at least throughout the first chapter.

and all that depends on the rest of the text, I suppose, so my criticism may not stand if I had read the rest of it.

I can see that. I just know publishing is a minefield. I'm usually at DragonCon every year and several writers are there selling their books. It takes that kind of dedicated marketing and even self-publishing to get the show going.

I started back in on my novel. It's 16 chapters now. I was doing a read through and clean up (to remove the porn) and got back into the story again. I started writing this thing in 1995 just to exercise a different side of the craft. I make my living as a writer, but I write dull, well-paying corporate shit that erodes my writing soul.
