Whomever wrote that letter can't control their emotions, made many grammar errors in that letter, and cannot call herself a Christian.
It has nothing to do with the writers religion. Morality can come or not come with any faith. Due to the fact the letter mentioned the child's death twice I think reporting it to the police, was important. I don't think the child should have been made aware of the letters contents though.. maybe with the media attention they're trying to find the writer whom obviously needs psychological help herself not only because of how hateful what she was saying was but also her writing was erratic, frenzied and had many typos. She was obviously pissed off when she wrote it.
When I read that letter, I'm convienced that it's the Internet and the Igadgets making people this stupid. IE: No social skills and no common sense.
It's odd how many people here are downplaying the hateful nature of this letter. If this was written about a homosexual teenager in the neighborhood instead of a retarded teen, everyone here would be calling this a hate crime.
Maybe or maybe not. But you know if it hit the media people would be DEMANDING the writer be charged with a hate crime.
I don't want to sound nitpicky here but Autistic doesn't necessarily mean retarded. A lot of people with Autism have very high IQs. There are some that are retarded but they are the minority. Most people with Autism are very advanced in certain areas but lacking in others. I work with an Autistic child almost every day and can certainly tell you that he isn't retarded. The writer of that letter I couldn't say one way or the other. I do agree with you that if it was said about a gay or lesbian youth then there would be all kinds of hell to pay. C/S, Rev J
I agree with you I would've handled it differently, but I think it's also more than that. With autism epidemiology/prevalency on the rise, more and more families are facing these kinds of rude people, who probably also had genuine complaints, but could've been more constructive about it. I also think people post things (like that letter) online because they're trying to find out if other families in similar situations are dealing with the same self-righteous neighbors. Going public is their way of saying: "We're not gonna take it anymore".
The neighbours have come together to show support for the family and the child. Makes me wonder if the hateful person who wrote this is not voicing their support for the family in order to not be singled out...
I've read scientific epidemiology journals/reports that say differently, but acknowledge the changing diagnosis of autism because of the widening umbrella because we don't know the cause of it, and it's a behavioral diagnosis. I read that 70% of autism diagnosis (meaning the entire spectrum) have some form of mental retardation, 10% are the prodigies that dominate the media attention and are the inspiration for movies, and the other 20% are normal range intelligence or above average intelligence but might have other challenges communicating, have compounding emotional or behavioral disorders. A common one is depressive anxiety disorder, and over sensitivities to certain sounds, light frequencies, patterns, and trouble taking perspective. But of course if you work with autistic individuals you probably have read the same psychological medical journals. I just stated everything here for others who don't have such awareness of what Autism is and how varied it is. ---Other responses to why I said what I did in previous posts of mine on this thread--- I made the Christian reference because the woman who wrote that letter said "GOD!!!" the first few paragraphs, and made an argument contrary to Christian teachings about the disabled not being entitled to special treatment. Also, I should add, that her request that the mother euthanize her child is not a reasonable option because it is illegal, so why mention it in the letter? And also again she is wrong from a logical perspectives, about certain sounds being natural or unnatural. So I have to ask...who's the retard now?
This person seems to be a waste of perfectly good human biology. The child did not CHOOSE to be born in this way. It's not his or her fault they cannot express themselves in the same way most of us can, and it's no reason to be blatantly and ignorantly discriminative against him or her. Is he or she not also a human being??? It's such a shame that life is as hard and sometimes cruel as it is and that some people go out of their own way to make it even harder for others. Whoever wrote that insincere letter, I say this... "Fuck yourself." Again. "Fuck yourself." :2thumbsup:
This is also what the Internet has created. A generation that has no fear of getting punched in the mouth for acting like clowns. As much as I believe in being peaceful I'm forced to admit there's something to be said for the "old punch in the mouth" that put clowns in their place.
This is so so sad, what an angry pathetic little person she is to say such horrible things about a kid
