This is not your grandfather's Superman. Oh wait! I am the grandfather. OK, this is not the superman that I grew up with - and yet it is.

This movie, like the original 1978 version opens on Krypton where Jor El (Russell Crowe) is battling with a Republican Council who will not believe that the planet is in danger because of their unwise bleeding it for fuel and he is in an actual battle with General Zod (Michael Shannon).

Jor El and his wife (Ayelet Zurer) manage to get their newborn baby, Kal El into a craft headed for Earth before Krypton implodes. This movie deviates a bit in style from the earlier version as we only see the young Clark Kent (Cooper Timberline, 9 years & Dylan Sprayberry, 13 years) in flashback from his adult version (Henry Cavill). This is where we pick up bits and pieces of his life in Smallville, Kansas with his foster parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner & Diane Lane).

This version has our superhero more reflective and a bit sullen as he anonymously works at various jobs concealing his powers until invariably he is forced to reveal them while saving human lives. On one such job in the Arctic he meets Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams) who is covering a story about the discovery of a large ship frozen in the ice. It is here where Clark is working under an assumed name and where Lois gets injured that he reveals some of his powers to her by cauterizing her wound with his eyes. He then flies off and she wants to report the story but Editor Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) won't let her.

But, this alien stranger is the least of their concerns as General Zod and his crew of conspirators escaped when Krypton blew up, have been searching for Kal El for 30 years and finally get to earth.

Here is where things start turning into the usual action movie, as all the Krypton ppl have the same superpowers as Kal El and they go at it with fury. This movie is in 3-D but I saw it in 2-D.

The movie could have been shortened a bit if they took out just a bit of the destruction and excessive action. As a person who watches these comic book movies, perhaps I have grown tired of seeing such gratuitous destruction of cities such as Metropolis (New York City) where skyscrapers are seen crashing to the ground - and no one even thinks of the multiple thousands of ppl who are dying in them. Maybe Sep. 11, 2001 has tainted my suspension of disbelief - because I know that with just two of those towers going down 3K ppl will die horrible deaths. For those of us so tainted, the happy moment of two main characters survival somehow gets lost. But movies like The Avengers, Transformers and this one where such destruction is just blown off as we focus on our heroes does get to some of us - and it is not really that necessary to the story - just more special effects because that is what the kids want.

Other than that, I really did like the movie. I liked the fresh take on an old story with all the characters present. I also liked how they explained the "S" that "Superman" wears on his chest. It is not an S, but a Krypton glyph meaning "Hope." It is a family crest, which explains why Jor El is wearing it (in this movie and the 1978 movie).

I'll go see it cos its Superman, twill be a good movie, lots of good actors

    .....buuuuut

He's just not hot enough to be Superman

Like Chistopher Reeve or Tom Welling, should be OMG is that even legal hot. Even Brandon Routh who played it a bit too sensitive and was maybe a bit too pretty was still phroar! Cavill is too blerk

And Amy adams as Lois, she too bland

Morpheus is Perry White, that will be confusing - 'That you are a slave, Kent. Like everyone else you were born into bondage. Into a prison that you cannot taste or see or touch. A prison for your mind'

IDK about that. He seemed quite appealing to me. He is playing the Superman good boy who takes abuse from bullies and walks away. He is more passionate in this one with Lois and there are some scenes where they show his dreamy facial features.

And, his bod is quite buff - more than he was in Immortals.

I saw Man of Steel in a press screening in Chile last Friday. First I'm going to say it is great. There's a lot of critics comparing it to the Donner movies, but this is something different. I loved the Donner/Reeve movies. But that is 35 years old. It's time to move on. Something that a lot of critics are also saying is that it doesn't have "magic", or "humour", taking away the "fun" that superman has.... Excuse me but that belonged to the Donner universe, which was fine for it's day, but nowadays some may call it "cheesy" and not serius, too fantasy and all powerful.

Man of Steel is serious. It's in the real world. It shows what would happen if it was inserted in a real world, what would be people's reaction, governments, army, media, etc... This approach was taken with The Dark Knight trilogy and it worked. It's different than the light movies Marvel has given us (except for the first Iron Man, which I think had a little more serious tone). And believe me, it is not "dark", it feels real!!!. The movie gives answers to a lot of questions.

The Clark 's journey from boy to man is very well done, like batman begins. Cavill is great as Superman, and he gives the role a real character's decisions and reactions. Amy Adams is a great Lois, tough and very brave, not the woman in danger every time, but a real badass!!! Russel Crowe is also great as Jor el, and Shannon is the best Zod one can hope, maybe a little over the top. Faora is also frightening and shows some robotic coldness of a society of warriors with no moral to stop them. Diane Lane is a great mom and Costner is the best Pa kent with little screen time. The other characters are all great and their screen time serves the pacing of the film. The critics also say it has little character time, but it serves for the porpose of the movie, there's a lot of things happening and there's a limited time to tell the story, which is awesome and very entertaining. Also it is built as with the sense that there will be secuels, so the romance, conflicts and characters will be more explored or developed in secuels. There's sci fi, adventure, drama, action, all in one.

The best action I have seen. The Fx are really great and the fighting is similar to the animated justice league's best fight's, with massive destruction. I could go on and on talking great about this movie, but to say something, I will say it's one of the best movie experiences I've had.

  7. Good thing I had the sense to stop about halfway through it sounds like. Even though I thought some of the acting in the beginning was superb. It still bores me! Enough backstory. Just have the balls to give us Superman. Everybody knows he's this dude in tights and there's no justifying that. Just give us kick ass Superman, that's all I'm saying.

I thought the movie could have started at about the 40 minute mark with long deceased Jor El speaking to his son. Why did I have to watch 40 minutes and then have to listen to Jor El explain the first 40 minutes. That defeats the purpose of movies.

Fuck this was such a good movie, didnt expect what I got. The Cast were awesome. Think I preferred this to the Avengers

First 1/3 is like a sci fi nerds wet dream, its a Superman movie, but that first 40 mins looks like Star Trek, then you get kick ass Superman. So maybe not for everyone, but a winning combination for this nerd

Saw the 2D version last night, got to see this in 3D now

Overall I thought it was a good movie, but I think it got a little carried away with the action at the end.

I didn't care much for this film. I also had to give it a lower rating because of the advertisemnts that didn't need to be there. I'm all for advertisements if they make sense, but when they don't I dislike.

While i loved the movie , it seemed to get too patriotic at some points, hinting that the greater good of america seems to be morally more important.

Yeah, it is a little too late and we are all too jaded for that Truth, Justice and the American Way. Fact is Truth & Justice have been woefully lacking in America for most of my lifetime. Time to reassess that patriotic indoctrination.

I finally saw this movie last night. It wasn't bad....... BUT, I prefer the Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh versions that also have the iconic score by John Williams. I really do think a big part of what makes Superman so, well, Superman is that music. It's not just film music, that piece is a clear statement in my opinion. It's like, you listen to it once and the melody will stay with you forever, just like the images of Christopher Reeve kicking ass as Superman or being comical as Clark Kent. I loved Superman Returns for the very reason that Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey were able to, in my opinion, preserve what Reeve and Gene Hackman had built and nurtured in the past films but also add their own interpretations. And because they honoured what those Superman films were about, the theme music and all, a viewer like myself would perceive Superman Returns as truly a "triumphant return". I mean, I cry when I watch Superman Returns.

Man Of Steel..... It was entertaining. Acting was good too, I think. But it was just TOO dark, and TOO chaotic in my opinion. Way too much action and destruction(which Shale and Photodude have also mentioned already), with way too little lightness as far as I'm concerned. Plus, Hans Zimmer's music, while indeed good, wasn't memorable at all. I can't even remember what the melody was like, and I've actually watched the movie again earlier today as well. I DID find the Krypton scenes in the beginning to be quite cool, though. And of course the special effects looked awesome. But once again, I just felt like they destroyed way too many things in the battle sequences. In my opinion(and as it happens also Shale's), all that destruction on such a crazy level was excessive and unnecessary. And the movie as a whole didn't really speak much to me, other than the fact that it was action-packed and had a lot of visual effects. I don't dislike the film, but I'm not that impressed either.

I never got to into any of the Superman movie,s ,,probably cause I loved the TV series when I (we) were kids. The radio show was done by 1949-I wasnt even around till 1950- - Ive listened to some old shows from the 40,s- pretty cool. WW2 was going on,and people we,re really looking for a hero- fantasy or not *I don't remember when we got our TV ,but I do remember that Superman was one of the shows I hated to miss - -
I just loved those 1/2 hour black and white shows. George Reeves was great (although being typecast like that contributed to his unhappiness and eventual death)--as was the rest of the crew. I know it was a different time.. but that show congers up memories of my youth like few other TV shows- - -Evil came in the way of real life type criminals ,not evil geniuses , ,, I used to collect all the DC comics back in those days,,I guess seeing your childhood fantasy hero on a big screen instead of the anticipated pages of a comic book ,,deflated some of my memory's . I also liked that he always stood up for the little guy, and his enemies werent other superhero,s gone bad--they were mostly street thugs,,or the mobsters of Metropolis. Yeah, the Daily Planet was never at a loss for a headline
I dont knowI guess Im an old fuck
    (and dont call me chief!!)
BTW- I have to admit the 1st movie was very good and I did really like it , I just couldn't get with any of the others --although I saw them all--
