Hey all! My aunt just gave me all of her oil painting supplies! The problem is I haven't used oil paints since I was a kid in art class. What do I need to clean my brushes, etc? Can oil paints go "bad"? Should I sketch in pencil on the canvas first, then paint? Any advice would be great! Thanks! Happy Painting.
Cleaning your brushes is very important. Use oil of turpentine and a rag, then, once the brush is fairly clean, rub the bristles in a plastic glass, again with oil of turpentine. Give the brush a good final rinse and squeeze out any water. What do you mean when you ask if oil paints go bad? And for the sketch...it depends on how good you are! Good luck and have fun!
Some of the paints look like the oil has seperated from the rest, leaving it either runny or goopy. Does that explain anything? Thanks for thr info on cleaning my brushes.
Well I tried to paint with the oils. I could only open less than half of the tubes, but I had enough for a decent palatte. The problem is that the paint never dried! Did I paint to thick? Too many layers of paint in too little time? Any advice would be great! Thanks guys.
Oil is famous for taking forever to dry. It also blends really well. when it does dry it will last forever. Those paintings still kicking from the middles ages are oil. I've never worked with oils but alot of people like them. i use acrylics.
I've never painted with oil either. I use industrial paint. The same kind you use to paint your house.
