Many businesses allow wheelchairs inside but not bicycles, why?

There've been times when I'm on my bike running errands and there's no place to lock it up on the outside, so I have to walk it indoors to get my tasks done. But I have workers there yell at me that I can't bring it in because of policy. I even once had a security guard tell me to carry it because my wheels weren't allowed to touch the granite floor. What? Do they make the wheel chair rider get up and carry the wheelchair too? It makes no sense!

When I walk my bike, I don't crash into people and objects. So why are some businesses so anal about people walking bikes around? It's not like they are worried about the floor, because wheelchair tires are the exact same material.

Anyone have a logical answer here?

You don't need your bike people in wheelchairs need their wheelchairs.

Your bike isn't a wheelchair. People in wheelchairs would love to have your problems...

Service dogs are also allowed to enter places with their people. I would not dream of deciding I could take my dog shopping with me just because service animals are allowed to go in.

you just reminded me of the dickwads who figured out how to register their pet as a service dog

so many people here have those..its ridiculous ..its insulting to the ones who actually need them

In the Netherlands there are more bicycles than people yet we don't have anyone making a problem of this.

in many peoples cases the only way they can get to work is by a bike. If it were to get stolen, they would not have a means to get to work. So, I think in some cases it should be okay for example.....walmart...anywhere that sells bikes

Neither bikes nor wheelchairs are bad. As has been pointed out, a person who is disabled has an urgent need to use a wheel chair.

It would be good if there was a bike rack near all public places.

Write to your state reps and ask them to support more public bike racks. There are probably some pro-bike groups that you could join.

You have bicycle and chain locks in all degrees. That's how it's done over here.

    edit:
We have lots of those too. Definately the solution. Not only for this little problem but also to get less car traffic in your big cities. I've heard New York for example is already making an effort getting more people in the city to travel on bicycle instead of taking the car :cheers2:

yes, that is a good solution, but what do you suppose someone does until they do put them in?

    Simple.

Walk from the nearest bike rack.

Be grateful that you can and leave the disabled people out of it.

The logical answer is that they do indeed care about the floors, but they must allow wheelchairs in because to refuse to do so would be immoral and illegal.

To be fair I didn't say disabled people shouldn't be able to use their wheelchairs if someone can't walk with their bike, I just feel if there is no bike rack anywhere ( we only have one at the library), and the store sells bikes, what would the big deal be if one person walked with their bike?

However, I do not like the people who are not disabled, using the scooters. I was 285 one time and I still walked in the store, I asked someone if they had any back problems or anything, their answer

"no im just 250 lbs and its hard to walk"

it made me very upset, because there was a lady in a wheel chair who needed a scooter, but there were non there, so she had to have a family member push her in a wheel chair, and another one use a shopping cart.

I lived in the Sonoma/Marin area of Ca. where they have some of the most advanced mountain bikes etc and most advanced bike thieves. I rode my bike everywhere and solved the theft prob by riding an older Swinn 3speed secured with a k9 choke chain and a cheap little padlock, just enough to be more hassle than it's worth to steal.

    ^ This.
But really, its not like a bike rack is your absolute and only option.
I'm sure if there is a big tree around or some kind of light pole or something of that sort would work too.
