skycanvas Premptive surgey isn't new. She had a test. You can question the veracity of that as much as you like, please post some research where it has been shown to be a waste of time. She looked into her family history. She chose to have surgery. She acknowledged there are other options. It's a personal choice. She isn't invincible. You don't agree with preemptive surgery - fine. You don't think she was brave - fine. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that women with a gene mutation linked to breast and ovarian cancer face lower risks of developing such cancer after receiving mastectomies or having their ovaries removed, The Wall Street Journal reports. The study, which involved 2,482 women, "provides the most concrete evidence to date about the benefit of undergoing such preventative surgeries in women who carry mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. The study also showed that women who underwent the preventative surgeries were less likely to die than women who opted not to have surgery." Between 1974 and 2008, none of the 247 women in the study who underwent mastectomies developed breast cancer. Seven percent of the women who did not have the procedure were diagnosed with breast cancer (Dooren, 8/31). http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/daily-reports/2010/september/01/breast-cancer-study.aspx So what. It's her life. She still has breasts, btw.
Angelina Jolie Will Have Ovaries Removed to Lower Chances of Cancer: Report Actress has already had double mastectomy due to gene linked to high risk for breast, ovarian cancer http://health.usnews.com/health-news/news/articles/2013/05/15/angelina-jolie-will-have-ovaries-removed-to-lower-chances-of-cancer-report Yeah, this Headline I just found pretty much says it all. I have to quit wasting time on this because I can't conceptualize the form of thought that she embraces. I'm not going to keep batting for her alter ego. Maybe Brad went through this before backing off. Some peoples' very weakness is their strength. This woman will go down (with scalpel) swinging. When I move so a man can get down the theater row, he says thanks. But a woman says: That's OK, because she thinks you might be implying she's fat. —SC
I read that. I didn't post it, because they have no idea if she will have her ovaries removed. Angelina hasn't mentioned anything about having her ovaries removed. She may. She may not. Implying she will soon - is just speculative/presumptive. This might be why not - for now... Warning: It mentions her being brave. In choosing, at least for now, not to have an oopherectomy, Jolie may have challenged medical advice – with justification http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/may/17/angelina-jolie-ovaries-not-removed
So you're saying in a nutshell that you think preventive medical procedures are stupid? Fine you have the right to have that opinion. One issue I do take with your tone in these posts, is that you completely disregard statistical evidence as if it had no credibility at all and the numbers themselves were pulled out of thin air. In my opinion, your views are mostly emotionally based with minimal generalization logic to support them, and I'm calling you out on it; that's all. Furthermore, I have nothing against Melissa Etheridge, the tone of her article seems to imply she's concerned about random females making uneducated medical decisions based on being a part of Jolie's fandom, that is a valid concern I share with her if indeed that was the premise of her comments.
First off, "girls" would have to have their parents permission to do something like this. Secondly, my breasts do not define me. If I can avoid, or substantially reduce my reasonable risk of needing radiation, chemotherapy, lost work, stress on my loved ones, financial stress of taking on cancer and its lessons, I would do it. As it is, I gave no family medical history to trace as an adoptee. I'd have to go soley on the genetic test. Like any major decision, I would have to weigh benefits and deficits. I'd have to find where "substantially" lies, for me. I have precancerous cells removed on my skin. Why would I not be proactive with breast material and lymph nodes? Mile in her shoes.
