The flood of 1913 was pretty devastating.

I often walk my dog in the local cemetery and found a gravestone about a couple who lost their lives, along with four of their eight children, in the Delaware OH flood. I found the above link by looking up the flood a couple years ago.

I've no idea if this hit this area... Seems to be a shortage of historical reports around here.

It's probably all grouped with the histories of the nearest large cities. What city are you in/near?

About mid way between Marion and Mansfield... Head waters for the Olentangy are in my back yard and side yard. It is a creek most of the time but when it gets going it's a river through my basement.

Here in the Netherlands the people were frightened for an upcoming war. The larger countries of stronghold Europe were showing how much power they had and nationalism and the patriots grew stronger. The Netherlands tried to stay neutral and they did. Most of the war was faught in the countries in the south, Belgium and France.
The only thing we did in the First World War was selling drugs to the soldiers so they didn't go mad in the pits.

If you read the book The century of my father by Geert Mak it seems lots of dutch people weren't busy with that approaching war at all. I don't think 'we' only sold drugs, dutchies liked to make big profits on everything during the first WW :p

a lot of countries make lots of money by a war (good reason to start one). So the people in the economy think it's ok. But the normal people didn't like the idea of it (a good reason to stay neutral). Do you think you feel safe if there is a war between countries all around you? If you are sure you are safe then, and if you are sure the countries are not using your ground for a war, then your trust in mankind is to big.

Fortunately there were no fights on our ground but in a time like that you can't just trust other countries (not even your own).

Geert is a great historian, I think he wrote that the governement was not afraid for loosing there neutrality. The people must be.

I think the majority of the people felt save, yes. Their world was not so big back then and they didn't worry about 'mankind' or Europe, perhaps not even about the province on the other end of their country. Their version of the Netherlands was what they knew and saw (or read or hear, which the average person limited to their fav source, ignoring all other).
